Because Amex Tech is powered by our technology, our culture, and our colleagues.As a Software Engineer in Global Merchant Services Technology (GMST) you will be crafting solutions that are scalable and can be delivered iteratively to enhance business value, building core features and functions of card transaction systems on our distributed platform deployed in the cloud. Actively participating in agile teams and the latest development practices, writing code and unit tests, working with API specs and automation. Providing technical leadership to engineers to aid in the development of engineers within the team. If so, join our GMST team and work on the Merchant Platform!ResponsibilitiesMentor junior Software Engineers and cross-functional team of colleagues, fostering a culture of excellence and innovationDirect the design, development, testing, and deployment of software applications and systemsOversee a variety of tasks, platforms, and technologies to expand new and existing software to meet changing requirementsWrite automated unit tests to ensure correctness and stabilityBuild automated CICD Pipelines with quality gates, test-automation and automated approvals. Provide technical guidance to ensure adherence to best practices and coding standardsMonitor software performance and implement improvements to optimize functionalityAnalyze technical challenges and provide innovative solutions to enhance software quality and efficiencyReviews code for accuracy, quality, and adherence to best practices, offering constructive feedbackCollaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration and deployment of software solutionsCollaborate and co-create effectively with teams in product and the business to align technology initiatives with business objectivesQualificationsBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and/or comparable experience; advanced degree preferred.Knowledge of distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, NoSQL, and relational databasesKnowledge of the core tools used in the planning, analyzing, crafting, building, testing, configuring, and maintaining of assigned application(s)Degree in computer science, computer engineering or a related field.Significant hands-on experience in application architecture / design, software development, and testing, preferably in an Agile environment within a professional environment.Minimum 10 years of proven experience using Java, React, Vert.x, NMS4J, Spring, Spark, Postgres, Restful APIs, Redis, Kafka, IntelliJ, Couchbase, OpenSearch and cloud-native application development.Hands-on experience and knowledge of Public Cloud and related technologies (AWS -EKS, AWS-Lambdas, AWS-AuroraDB, AWS Managed Services GCP, Kubernetes).Hands-on experience with full stack development using Node.js, Java, Python, or similar backend technologiesProficiency in front-end technologies including HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript/TypeScript, and component-based architectureExperience designing, and building AI-powered and Agentic AI solutions, creating Agent Skills, including LLM-based applications, AI agents, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), prompt engineering, orchestration frameworks, vector databases, and AI service integrations.Strong engineering and professional leadership skills.Demonstrated ability to lead, partner, and collaborate multi-functionally across many engineering teams.Experience in Agile software development methodologies and practices such as Scrum/Kanban, iterations, user storiesExperience in automation testing and documentation (i.e. automated, functional, and performance) and related technologies(Karate, Postman, Cucumber, Playwright, Selenium, Jenkins, Github Actions).Depending on factors such as business unit requirements, the nature of the position, cost and applicable laws, American Express may provide visa sponsorship for certain positions.About the TeamAt American Express, our culture is built on a 175-year history of innovation, shared values and Leadership Behaviors, and an unwavering commitment to back our customers, communities, and colleagues.
