The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Position Summary Reporting directly to the Director of Clinical Operations, Clinical Coordinator II - Registered Nurse II, assists physicians with patient care, health education/promotion, electronic medical record (EMR) chart management, coordination of patient care and clinical protocols as needed in the Department of Neurological Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center. Clinical Care & Patient Management Perform comprehensive neurological assessments and monitor changes in patient status, escalating concerns to the neurosurgical team as appropriate. Provide preoperative education and preparation, including completion of surgical checklists, coordination of imaging and laboratory testing, and verification of surgical readiness. Conduct postoperative assessments, including wound evaluation, drain management, pain assessment, and complication prevention. Perform postoperative follow-up calls and telehealth check-ins within one week of surgery to assess recovery and reinforce care plans. Deliver patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, mobility restrictions, recovery expectations, and home care needs. Conduct physical assessments within the scope of nursing practice. Administer medications and immunizations as appropriate. Support symptom management through telephone, MyChart, and in-person triage. Care Coordination Collaborate with neurosurgeons, neurologists, rehabilitation specialists, social workers, case managers, schools, skilled nursing facilities, and other healthcare providers to ensure seamless care transitions. Coordinate referrals, diagnostic testing, imaging studies, and follow-up appointments. Communicate test results and treatment recommendations to patients and families. Coordinate transportation services in compliance with Medicaid Transportation System requirements. Partner with Orthotics and Rehabilitation Services to ensure appropriate bracing, postoperative care, and follow-up. Interface with rehabilitation facilities to facilitate admissions for specialized patient populations, including dorsal rhizotomy patients. Assist with medication renewals and prior authorizations as needed. Patient Outreach & Education Conduct proactive patient outreach to ensure continuity of care and compliance with follow-up recommendations. Communicate plans of care to patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams. Develop and maintain educational materials and patient resources. Promote patient and family satisfaction through compassionate, patient-centered care. Documentation & Electronic Medical Records Obtain comprehensive patient histories and perform detailed chart reviews. Document assessments, interventions, patient communications, and outreach activities accurately and timely within Epic. Maintain patient tracking lists and follow-up workflows within the EMR. Review and manage in-basket messages, health maintenance updates, immunization records, and clinical communications. Quality, Safety & Compliance Ensure adherence to infection prevention and control standards. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, evidence-based practice projects, and patient safety programs. Support ongoing clinical operations and departmental protocols. Assist in managing urgent and emergent patient situations in collaboration with the care team. Administrative & Operational Support Assist with pre-certifications and prior authorizations for procedures, medications, and diagnostic testing. Travel with Dr. Oh to off-site clinics approximately once per week. Participate in required departmental, divisional, and multidisciplinary meetings, including Pediatric Neurosurgery and Orthopedic Spine team meetings. Complete required organizational and departmental training. Review and maintain competency in new and existing clinical protocols. Support research initiatives, including patient enrollment in registries and obtaining photo/social media consents. Participate in projects aimed at improving patient engagement and the overall patient experience within Pediatric Neurosurgery. Precept and mentor new clinical staff, including Medical Assistants, LPNs, and junior nursing staff. Float to other clinics as operational needs require. Perform additional duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or equivalent in education and experience, plus 2-4 years of related experience. BLS certified. Current New York State RN license. Other Requirements Ability to work indoors in an environmentally controlled environment with a degree of dust, noise, odors, etc., without undue discomfort. Ability to perform sedentary work primarily involves sitting or standing for long periods of time. Travel between clinical sites may be required depending on need. Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, bodily fluid, and tissue. Incumbents are expected to perform and/or/assist in emergency care and/or first aid as needed.
