UC Berkeley Health Care Position

Provides health care to adolescent and adult patients to include assessing and treating a wide variety of conditions, ailments and injuries. Diagnose, manage and treat patients: obtain medical history, conduct physical examinations, order, perform and interpret diagnostic tests, provide treatment, prescribe education and counsel patients on diet, exercise and preventative health care. Refers patients with more serious conditions to other specialists for more complex care or other health care facilities for more intensive care. May act as head of the treatment team, providing consultation and direction to mid-level practitioners and nursing staff.

Responsibilities include performing procedures associated with area of specialization, providing appropriate education to patients, accurately establishing the nature of clinical problems, appropriately ordering and utilizing diagnostic tests, providing appropriate specialty diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures, maintaining medical record entries, keeping the referring primary care clinician informed of patients' progress, providing specialty consultation in area of expertise, providing feedback and education to primary care clinical staff, actively participating in quality improvement and peer-review activities, and providing early notification to Medical Director and/or UHS Risk Manager of potential high-risk incidents.

Required qualifications include MD or recognized equivalent, medical license, board certification in non-primary care specialty, and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of physician duties at this level.
