Job Title: Medical Assistant Job Description

This role supports physicians and clinicians in a clinical oncology setting by assisting with direct patient care, promoting efficient patient flow, and performing a variety of clinical and administrative tasks. The medical assistant helps prepare patients and exam rooms for visits and procedures, documents key clinical information, and supports the physician’s schedule while adhering to established compliance, ethics, and business standards.

• Escort patients to and from exam rooms, physician offices, and treatment rooms in a safe, courteous, and timely manner.
• Record patient data before each physician visit, including vital signs, height, weight, allergies, and any changes in medications.
• Obtain all necessary patient records and documentation required by the physician prior to treatments, procedures, or exams.
• Prepare and stock exam and treatment rooms with necessary supplies and equipment, and reorder supplies as needed to maintain readiness.
• Assist physicians with documentation, setup, and room preparation for exams and procedures.
• Maintain exam and treatment room disinfection protocols to support a clean, safe clinical environment.
• Respond promptly and professionally to patient calls and requests during clinic hours.
• Perform administrative duties such as typing, filing, faxing, reception, and other clerical tasks as requested by the supervisor or physician.
• Alert nurses or physicians immediately to abnormal vital signs or any significant information reported by patients.
• Collect inbound meaningful use data, including flu documentation and initial height and weight measurements.
• Print and review medication lists with patients to help ensure accuracy of current medications.
• Complete disability forms accurately and in a timely manner as requested.
• Schedule blood transfusions and therapeutic phlebotomies according to physician orders and established protocols.
• Coordinate and order special tests under provider direction, such as specific genetic or molecular tests (for example, KRAS testing and other specialized oncology-related diagnostics).
• Enter orders in the electronic health record under a provider’s direction and supervision, in accordance with clinic policies and applicable regulations.
• Support and adhere to the organization’s compliance program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.
• Assist with general patient care activities such as phlebotomy and blood pressure measurement, within scope of practice and training.
• Provide courteous and responsive customer service to patients, families, and clinical staff.
• Collaborate with the care team to promote efficient patient flow and a positive patient experience throughout the oncology clinic.

• Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a medical assistant or nursing assistant in a clinical setting.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification.
• Demonstrated medical assisting skills, including taking vital signs, measuring height and weight, and assisting with exams and procedures.
• Experience with phlebotomy and blood collection techniques (preferred but strongly valued).
• Ability to use electronic medical records (EMR) and electronic health record (EHR) systems for documentation and order entry.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and basic clinical procedures.
• Strong patient care skills with a focus on safety, comfort, and dignity.
• Effective customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
• Ability to accurately document clinical information and maintain organized records.
• Basic computer skills, including typing and handling electronic communications.
• Ability to recognize and promptly report abnormal vital signs or significant patient concerns to clinical staff.
• Capability to perform manual tasks such as blood pressure measurement and other routine clinical assessments.
• Ability to follow infection control and disinfection protocols consistently.
• Capacity to handle multiple tasks, prioritize responsibilities, and support efficient patient flow in a busy oncology clinic.

• Certificate of graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants preferred.
• Certified Medical Assistant (CMA, RMA, or equivalent) credential preferred.
• Phlebotomy experience preferred, including experience with blood draws and specimen handling.
• Familiarity with oncology care settings and related diagnostics is an advantage.
• Experience scheduling procedures such as blood transfusions and therapeutic phlebotomies.
• Ability to complete disability and other medical forms accurately and efficiently.
• Experience with ordering or coordinating specialized tests, including genetic or molecular testing, under provider supervision.
• Understanding of compliance requirements and willingness to adhere to a formal Code of Ethics and Business Standards.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in both clinical and administrative tasks.
• Some state regulations may require specific certifications to work as a medical assistant; willingness and ability to obtain any required state-specific certifications.

This position is based in an oncology office operating Monday through Friday from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The role involves working closely with physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment that is part of a large oncology network. The medical assistant uses electronic medical record and electronic health record systems regularly for documentation and order entry. The physical demands of the role include standing and walking for extended periods, frequent use of hands and fingers, and eye-hand coordination to perform clinical tasks. The position requires handling and lifting patients, assisting with patient transfers, and occasionally lifting and carrying items weighing up to 40 pounds. Corrected vision and hearing to normal range are needed to safely perform clinical duties. The environment requires strict adherence to infection control, disinfection protocols, and safe handling of medical equipment and supplies, supporting a professional clinical setting focused on high-quality oncology care.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Silver Spring, MD.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr.
