Chicana and Chicano Studies Lecturer Pool

The Chronicle Of Higher Education, Inc.

Department Summary Created in 1968 and commenced in 1969, the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department (CCS) at San Jose State University educates and serves students through interdisciplinary education based on principles of social justice. CCS curriculum prepares students to critically examine and address intellectual traditions and contemporary issues resulting from political, historical, economic, and cultural constructs of race, class, and gender, and as they manifest in Chicanx and US Latinx communities. CCS at SJSU is the oldest Graduate Program in Chicana/o Studies in the United States and is one of only five Graduate Programs in Chicana/o Studies in California and the only one north of Santa Barbara, California. The CCS Department offers undergraduate major and minor degrees, as well as its historic master's degree. The CCS Department serves the College of Social Sciences (CoSS) and SJSU by offering required numerous General Education classes, including those of American Institutions, Public Speaking, and Ethnic Studies. The CCS Department's temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The fall term of the academic year begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the spring term begins mid-January and ends in mid-May. Brief Description of Duties CCS Lecturer Faculty teach lower and upper division courses (depending on qualifications and degree level) and serve weekly office hour(s) based on assigned teaching unit load, according to University Policy. CCS Lecturer Faculty must possess education, specialization and / or experiential knowledge in Chicana/o Studies methodologies and / or the Ethnic Studies discipline, more broadly. All Faculty must organize their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official LMS provided for the SJSU community. All classes at SJSU, whether online or not, must be anchored in the Canvas platform to ensure faculty-student connection in a common space as all students are directed to log in to Canvas for online access to their classes. You will have access to this system prior to the semester start date. All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid). All Faculty must demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity— including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation— through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement. Required Qualifications Master's degree in the field relevant to the curriculum or related discipline to teach lower division courses in Chicana/o Studies [OR] Ph.D. degree in the field relevant to the curriculum or related discipline is required to teach upper division courses in Chicana/o Studies. Preference will be given to candidates with prior teaching experience at the college or university level and who can furnish evidence of excellence in teaching. Applicants must have experience in teaching undergraduates from diverse ages, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds. Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience. Conditional Appointment Please be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the "Order of Work," or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.
