Job Title: Lead Machinist / Shop Supervisor

Job Description

This role leads and supervises daily machine shop operations while remaining actively involved in hands-on CNC machining. You will oversee workflow, optimize machining processes, ensure product quality, and support a safe and efficient shop environment. In addition to operating CNC lathes and mills, you will mentor machinists and operators and collaborate with leadership to meet changing customer requirements and production goals.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise daily operations in the machine shop, ensuring smooth and efficient production.
• Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC lathes, vertical mills, and horizontal mills in a hands-on capacity.
• Perform complex machine setups and optimize machining processes to improve efficiency, quality, and throughput.
• Collaborate with leadership to prioritize work orders and adjust production schedules as customer requirements change.
• Monitor workflow, machine utilization, and overall shop productivity to ensure on-time delivery of customer orders.
• Conduct detailed inspections of machined components using precision measuring instruments and inspection equipment.
• Verify that all products meet established quality specifications and customer requirements, and support quality documentation as needed.
• Train, mentor, and support machinists and machine operators to develop their technical skills and performance.
• Maintain a safe, organized, and productive work environment, promoting best practices in housekeeping and safety.
• Troubleshoot manufacturing and machining issues promptly to minimize downtime and maintain production continuity.
• Support fabrication and machine operating activities as needed to meet production and quality goals.
• Apply knowledge of aerospace-related machining requirements when applicable to ensure compliance with high-precision standards.

Essential Skills

• At least 5 years of CNC machining experience, preferably in a lead or supervisory capacity.
• Strong hands-on experience operating CNC lathes, vertical milling machines, and horizontal mills.
• Excellent machine setup skills, including complex and advanced CNC setups.
• Proven troubleshooting ability for CNC machining and manufacturing issues.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
• Proficiency with precision measuring tools and inspection equipment, including the ability to perform detailed quality inspections.
• Demonstrated leadership skills with experience in supervision, team guidance, and day-to-day coordination.
• Experience in machine operating within a production or job shop environment.
• Strong understanding of CNC machining processes and best practices for quality and efficiency.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in aerospace machining or experience working to aerospace-level tolerances and standards.
• Experience in fabrication or related metalworking processes.
• Leadership and team development capabilities, including mentoring and training less experienced machinists and operators.
• Experience with quality inspection procedures and documentation practices.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and customer requirements in a dynamic production environment.

Work Environment

This position is based in a machine shop environment with daily use of CNC lathes, vertical mills, and horizontal mills. You will work around precision measuring instruments and inspection equipment and will regularly handle metal components and fabricated parts. The role is highly hands-on and involves standing at machines, performing setups, and moving between workstations to monitor workflow and support operators. The shop emphasizes safety, organization, and productivity, with a focus on maintaining a clean and orderly workspace. Working hours follow typical production schedules, with potential adjustments as needed to meet customer deadlines and changing production priorities.

This is a Permanent position based out of New Haven, CT.

The pay range for this position is $55000.00 - $85000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

This is a fully onsite position in New Haven,CT.
