Job Description

Primary care & management of women’s health, including obstetric & gynecological care. Both low‑risk and high‑risk pregnancies are managed as outlined within practice guidelines.

Developing and supporting excellence in the clinical practice and patient care, while maintaining the Maternal Child Health Services mission, philosophy, and policies as well as the standards and practices of the Medical Center.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate prenatal care for the caseload of patients in the ambulatory care setting.
• Take pertinent history and perform physical & pelvic examinations.
• Obtain laboratory & diagnostic tests and provide counseling and teaching as needed.
• Identify risk factors, develop appropriate plans of management, and manage the care of selected patients admitted to the inpatient unit based on unit protocols in collaboration with the attending physician.
• Obtain physician consultation for management of any medical or obstetrical complications not covered in departmental protocols.
• Perform functions as identified in the Midwife Scope of Practice.
• Provide intrapartum care: evaluate the status of labor, admit patient to the labor floor, perform admission physical examination, venipuncture and start intravenous infusions; obtain laboratory and diagnostic tests; evaluate results; assess labor progress by vaginal examination; make decisions regarding ambulation, anesthesia, amniotomy, fetal monitoring, patient positioning, and delivery venue; perform local infiltration or pudendal block; repair episiotomies; conduct spontaneous deliveries; manage third stage of labor; perform cervical and vaginal inspections; repair minor lacerations; manage uncomplicated recovery; decide newborn transfer; order intermittent fetal monitoring; perform immediate newborn appraisal and examination.
• Sign birth certificate of delivery (operative delivery requires physician signature).
• Coordinate patient care in triage room on L&D.
• Attend and participate in L&D board rounds.
• Participate in the care of women during labor & delivery in consultation with attending physician: perform prostaglandin insertions for cervical ripening; manage oxytocin infusions; conduct spontaneous deliveries under supervision; perform VBAC deliveries; repair cervical or extended vaginal lacerations; assist on C‑secutions and BTL; insert Foley catheter bulbs and misoprostol for labor induction; order appropriate drugs for hemorrhage control; manually remove placenta; perform uterine exploration; perform selected high‑risk deliveries under physician supervision.
• Provide postpartum care: make daily rounds, examine patients, interpret laboratory results, provide postpartum teaching and counseling, prepare patients for tubal ligation, manage post‑cesarean and tubal ligation patients under supervision, write medication orders, remove sutures and staples, perform fever work‑ups and consult physician, plan discharges, obtain informed consent for infant circumcision.
• Attend daily teaching rounds and sign‑out rounds on the labor floor.
• Attend departmental grand rounds and teaching sessions as permitted.
• Be open, responsive, and supportive of diverse colleagues and promote a culturally sensitive environment.
• Teach and supervise medical students on the labor floor.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in nursing preferred.
• Demonstrated clinical experience related to obstetrics and the care of women & children.
• Certified nurse‑midwife according to the American College of Nurse‑Midwives and credentialed by the NYS Education Department, eligible to practice Professional Midwifery under Article 140 of the Education Act, and licensed to prescribe (Pharmacology course completed and examination passed).
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certificate (required for L&D and NICU).
• ACLS certification (required for ED, PACU, ICUs, Telemetry, L&D, Endoscopy, and APN Adult Oncology).
• BCLS certification.
• PALS certification (required for ED, PACU, IR, Peds ICU, and APNs Pediatric Oncology).

Compensation

The salary range for this role is $96,461 – $144,692 annually, in compliance with New York City Law on Salary Transparency. Actual salaries depend on experience, education, and operational need. The range does not include bonuses, differential pay, or other compensation or benefits.
