The Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) seeks a dedicated attorney for the newly created Immigrant Trust Office (ITO) as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG). The ITO is tasked with ensuring compliance with state law related to civil immigration enforcement, investigating complaints, and bringing legal actions to enforce the law. Responsibilities The AAG will enforce state law limits on state and local resources for civil immigration enforcement, prohibit agreements pursuant to 287(g), restrict localities and jails from detaining federal civil immigration violators, and strengthen protections for students. The role involves receiving complaints, conducting investigations, and bringing legal actions. Qualifications At least four (4) years of post‑graduate legal experience with a focus on civil litigation is strongly preferred, though candidates with a wide range of skills and experience are encouraged. Applicants with fewer years are also encouraged if well qualified. Knowledge of immigration enforcement, experience investigating or litigating government misconduct, and/or experience interfacing with government agencies and officials are preferred. Excellent legal analysis, legal writing and editing, and oral advocacy skills. Strong organizational, interpersonal communication, problem‑solving, and teamwork skills. Demonstrated commitment to public service. Fluency in a second language is a plus. Applicants must reside in (or soon become a resident of) New York state and be admitted to practice law in New York state. OAG attorneys must be U.S. citizens, and a two‑year commitment upon hiring is required.
