Description
DEFINITION
Under the general direction and supervision of the Community Services Deputy Director and Recreation Manager the Recreation Coordinator implements, oversees, and schedules various City recreation and enrichment programs, focusing on afterschool programs, day camps, skateboarding, special events, and sports. The Recreation Coordinator will support Department staff with program marketing, including creating flyers, advertisements, press releases, and content for the City's website and social media platforms. The position will hire, train, evaluate, and supervise several part-time staff and independent contractors under the direction of the Community Services Deputy Director and Recreation Manager. The Recreation Coordinator will oversee operations of recreation and sports facilities, including but not limited to athletic fields, gymnasiums, skate parks, tennis courts, and parks year-round by enforcing rules and regulations, applying policies and guidelines, and preparing for the facility's daily operation with minimal supervision. The Recreation Coordinator will foster cooperative working relationships with various public and private agencies that benefit the Malibu community in addition to supporting the Department's general operations, which may include working on nights, weekends, and holidays.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate should have experience working in the field of sports, program planning, coordinating, and marketing for people of all ages. The Recreation Coordinator will support Department staff and supervise part-time staff by appropriately delegating tasks, scheduling, and overseeing projects. The ideal candidate will work cooperatively with outside organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club, School District personnel, Malibu Library, and other non-profit organizations. The Recreation Coordinator will be organized, detail-oriented, and work within a tightknit team of recreation professionals. Professionally explain and enforce Department rules and regulations governing facilities, parks, and programs. Have the capacity to plan, prioritize, and produce comprehensive recreation and event proposals, agreements, budget, and marketing packages. The ideal candidate will have leadership, organization, critical thinking, and multi-tasking skills; using English effectively to communicate, both orally and in writing, and will display a positive attitude and ability to provide excellent customer service to the public, contractors, and City staff.

Examples of Duties

  • Plans, supervises, and coordinates recreation programs, activities, and services at various sites including senior centers, swimming pools, gyms, sports fields, and community centers, ensuring compliance with applicable state, and City regulations.
  • Recruits, selects, trains, and supervises part-time staff and volunteers for senior, adult, and youth recreation programs, sports leagues, and special events; provides guidance and evaluates performance to ensure effective program delivery.
  • Coordinates, promotes, and implements diverse recreational programs, including sports leagues, cultural arts, after-school programs, and nutrition activities, aiming to engage and serve the community effectively.
  • Identifies and addresses staff development needs; schedules and coordinates training programs for staff, coaches, and officials; monitors training effectiveness and ensures proper certification.
  • Acts as a liaison with patrons and residents, addressing inquiries, concerns, and resolving issues related to recreation program operations and services.
  • Coordinates first aid, CPR and other safety training for Recreation and other City staff; provides training to the public, as assigned.
  • Handles medical emergencies and injuries; provides first aid and/or adult and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation; contacts police, fire, and emergency medical services as required.
  • May work closely with representatives of other public, non-profit, and private organizations, including school districts and community groups.
  • Responds to and resolves inquiries and concerns from participants, family members and the public.
  • Provides input to budget requests and administers program budgets after adoption; may prepare and assist in the administration of various grants.
  • Maintains an inventory of necessary recreation, maintenance and aquatics supplies and equipment and makes approved purchases as needed.
  • Conducts regular inspections of parks and facilities, ensuring maintenance and safety standards are met; communicates emergency issues and progress on renovation projects.
  • Maintains comprehensive records of recreation program activities and services; prepares reports, memoranda, and correspondence as needed.
  • Develops presentations for board meetings, schools, community gatherings, and youth and parent groups to showcase recreational opportunities and initiatives.
  • Ensures staff observe and comply with all City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education:

Equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited college with major coursework in recreation, child development, sports exercise, public administration, or a related field.
Experience:

Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in coordinating comprehensive recreational programs.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of a certification in American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED.
  • Possession of a Safe Food Handler certification to be maintained throughout employment.

  • Carry out administrative tasks such as scheduling, reviewing time sheets, preparing maintenance reports, and conducting training meetings.
  • Coach and officiate a variety of sports.
  • Oversee expenditures and adhere to budgeted allocations; ensure program revenues are collected appropriately.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and written records of work performed.
  • Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
  • Effectively represent the department and the City in meetings with governmental agencies; community groups; various business, professional, and regulatory organizations; and in meetings with individuals.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, documentation, and other written materials.
  • Adopt the City's vision, mission, and values to provide high-quality public service and cultivate a vibrant, resilient, and livable city.

Paid Holidays: 9 paid holidays plus paid Winter Break (December 24 - January 1).
Malibu City Hall is closed on the following holidays:

Vacation Leave:
1-5 years: 96 hours per year.
6-10 years: 120 hours per year.

Sick Leave: 96 hours per year.

Vacation and sick leave cash-out provision. A portion of vacation leave can be cashed out at the applicable accrual year for qualifying employees. A portion of sick leave can be cashed out at the applicable accrual year for qualifying employees.

The City participates in the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). New members to CalPERS, new PEPRA formula 2% at 62, three-year average, 8.25% member contribution; classic CalPERS members 2% at 55, one-year average, the City pays the member contribution for classic CalPERS members. The City does not contribute to Social Security.

Health, Dental, Long Term/Short Term Disability, Life and Vision Insurance are all covered.

Health Insurance: A selection of health plans is available from CalPERS. The City will provide 100% paid premiums-coverage for employee and dependents up to the PERS Platinum PPO health plan level. Dental and Vision: 100% paid premiums-coverage for employee and dependents.

A voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan is available for employee participation. The City will match up to $50.00 per pay period of a contribution to our 457 Deferred Compensation Plan.


The City offers an Alternative Work Schedule (9/80). Subject to the discretion of management.


Employee Assistance Program; Tuition Reimbursement ($2,500 per fiscal year).

Employees have the option to sign up with the Ventura County Credit Union.


This position is 100% in-person at Malibu City Hall and is not eligible for hybrid remote work.

New hire and promotional appointments shall be subject to a probationary period of not less than six months.


Federal law requires mandatory contribution for each employee of 1.45%.
