Pastry Sous Chef

Founded in 2005 as Hudson Yards Catering, Union Square Events is a culinary and operations leader in the hospitality industry, partnering with a diverse portfolio of best-in-class clients. We produce one-of-a-kind catered events and unparalleled dining experiences in a variety of cultural, corporate, entertainment, and private venues throughout New York City and beyond.

The Pastry Sous Chef works alongside the management team to lead and oversee a high-volume pastry operation, producing everything from mousses, cookies, quick breads, layered cakes, ice creams, Viennoiserie, and plated or buffet-style desserts to chocolate work. This hands-on role includes daily production, menu development, recipe testing, ordering and inventory oversight, and maintaining food, labor, health, and safety standards. The Pastry Sous Chef is also responsible for fostering a positive, team-oriented kitchen culture, supporting administrative and people-management responsibilities, and assuming leadership of the department in the absence of the Executive Pastry Chef. Flexibility in scheduling is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support the pastry team in daily production and service execution
  • Assist the Executive Pastry Chef with menu development, recipe testing, and seasonal offerings
  • Ensure consistency, quality, and presentation standards across all pastry items
  • Oversee production schedules, inventory, ordering, and waste control
  • Train, mentor, and motivate team members while maintaining a positive kitchen culture
  • Maintain sanitation, safety, and food handling standards in compliance with regulations
  • Support catering, special events, and high-volume production operations
  • Help manage labor efficiency and maintain smooth kitchen operations in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of pastry experience in high-volume production environments
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask and perform well under pressure
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and quality standards
  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and team-focused
  • Proficient with basic computer systems and kitchen operations
  • ServSafe certification preferred
  • Catering experience is a plus
