OverviewThe City Attorney provides legal services to the Mayor, City Council, the City Manager, City Staff, Boards and Commissions, and the city‑owned Mary Greeley Medical Center in matters related to the operations, services, and activities of the municipality.Compensation PhilosophyThe City of Ames has a merit‑based salary structure that rewards growth and expertise. Consideration is given to education, experience, and skills that exceed the minimum requirements.BenefitsOur comprehensive benefits package includes health, dental, vision, retirement, and other benefits.Public Service Loan ForgivenessThe PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance of eligible federal student loans for employees who meet the program's requirements.ResponsibilitiesAct as the legal advisor and counsel to the City of Ames, its officers, departments, and city boards and commissions.Conduct legal research and advise city officials and staff on legality of operations, policies, procedures, and activities.Draft ordinances, resolutions, staff memos, reports, and other documents for review and action by the Mayor and City Council.Prepare and present legal opinions, staff memos, and other written advice to the Mayor, City Council, and city staff.Maintain communication with the City Manager's Office to prioritize legal work requests from city departments.Represent the City in general litigation matters, prosecute and defend suits in state and federal courts, and attend administrative hearings.Support the City Assessor on matters related to the assessor's work, and review legal documents for Mary Greeley Medical Center when requested.Attend City Council and board or commission meetings, provide legal advice and opinions as warranted.Manage the City Attorney's Office, following city policies and procedures, and assist in preparing the annual budget.Supervise legal professionals and support staff, leading the implementation of department goals and objectives.Conduct special projects and research assigned by the Mayor, City Council, or City Manager, with approval for work related to Mary Greeley Medical Center or city boards.Monitor performance of outside counsel retained by the city, ensuring appropriate representation.Education and ExperienceJuris Doctorate from an ABA‑accredited law school and admission to practice in Iowa state courts.Five (5) years of general legal practice, including at least one year of litigation, negotiation, and contract law.Some experience in municipal or government law preferred.Additional RequirementsPass a credit and background check.Preferred ExperienceAt least three (3) years of management and supervisory experience with legal staff or a legal department.At least one (1) year of experience in real estate law or construction contracts.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesExpertise in criminal, constitutional, municipal, human resources, labor relations, and contract law.Proficient in legal research, courtroom procedures, and legal writing.Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.Ability to present legal opinions clearly and to influence decision‑makers.Leadership skills to manage and develop staff.Competence in Microsoft Office Suite, legal databases, and legal management systems.Physical RequirementsWork involves approximately 85% sitting, with occasional standing, walking, and lifting objects up to 25 pounds.
