Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) Acute Internal Medicine - Evenings

The ANM is a key leadership role responsible for supporting the Nurse Manager in daily operations, clinical oversight, staff development, and ensuring high standards of patient care. The ANM will serve as a mentor, resource, and clinical leader, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment. The ideal candidate will have strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills. Overview Barnes‑Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Barnes‑Jewish Hospital’s staff includes faculty and physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by residents, interns, fellows, and other professionals. Barnes‑Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Acute Care Medicine treats patients with a full range of clinical issues‑from significant blood dyscrasias and advanced endocrine pathology to heart, renal, gastrointestinal conditions, infectious diseases, asthma, and many other diseases. Due to patient acuity, advanced training is provided to bring new nurses to the highest level of functioning. Each unit is led by a clinical manager and lead charge nurse, supported by an advanced practice nurse. Each unit also includes a case manager, social worker, physical therapist, dietitian, and pharmacist. This multidisciplinary team works with physicians, nurses, and patient care technicians to provide quality patient care. Preferred Qualifications Role Purpose The Assistant Nurse Manager provides administrative support to Nurse Managers and direct reports, coordinating patient care, performance management, equipment purchasing/management, and statistical analysis. Responsibilities Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet the overall operational goals of the department. May participate in the development of departmental staffing, revenue, and/or expense budgets and be directly responsible for adhering to those goals. Provides and oversees patient care according to planned interventions with regard to their age and developmental needs, documenting per policy. Creates and ensures implementation of a collaborative care plan based on assessment, diagnosis, and medical treatment. Supports review of staff hours vs scheduled hours, determines dispositions for variations, performs and approves daily payroll updates, reconciles time cards, tracks bonuses, and codes. Prepares all staff communications, huddle agendas, and leads meetings. Determines staffing needs; assigns overtime; recommends annual increases. Conducts interviews, performance reviews, draft corrective actions, and follows up on disciplinary actions. Responsible for staff productivity and overall operational goals of the department. Conducts performance evaluations and recommends areas of improvement. Recognized as a safety‑sensitive position; requires alertness and safe conduct at all times.
