Job Description Summary Organization's Summary Statement: Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Chair of the Fischell Department of Bioengineering. The department seeks a world‑class research leader to advance its research, education, and translational impact. Responsibilities include leading a research‑active academic department, developing programs with industrial partners, government labs, and foundations, and stewarding strong academic programs. The Fischell Department of Bioengineering is anchored in A. James Clark Hall, a 184,000‑square‑foot building with state‑of‑the‑art laboratories and the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices. The department currently has 25 regular tenure‑track faculty (with plans to expand), 8 core professional track faculty, 32 affiliate faculty members, and 14 staff members. It collaborates with the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, Amgen, BD, Beckman Coulter, Olympus, and other institutions. A $10 million gift from the Edward and Jennifer St. John Foundation launched the Edward & Jennifer St. John Center for Translational Engineering and Medicine (CTEM), a partnership that unites the department with the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The department supports entrepreneurship, having generated several start‑up companies and industrial collaborations that translate research into real‑world technologies. With more than 450 undergraduate students, 100 graduate students, and over $21 million in research expenditures for 2025, the department is a core educational and research unit at the University of Maryland. Minimum Qualifications Applicants must hold a earned doctorate in bioengineering or a closely related field, demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills, possess a proven research record with international recognition, and show a commitment to engineering education. Candidates must be qualified for appointment as a tenured full professor in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering.
