Funeral Director

Overview A funeral director/mortician (unless otherwise noted) is expected to maintain proficiency in two general concentrations – funeral service and clinical preparation. The responsibilities related to each proficiency are outlined below. Responsibilities Service-related responsibilities Provide pre-planning support to families preparing the loss of a loved one. Conduct pre-need arrangements. Provide support and guidance to the bereaved family during initial stages of grief. Review planning process, requirements, and timeline with family prior to arrangement conference. Provide a General Price List when asked about funeral service costs. Conduct arrangement conference with family to discuss the logistics regarding funeral services. Consult with family to obtain demographic information to ensure the timely completion of state permits and authorizations. Tactfully discuss the options and preferences for disposition of the remains and explain the various costs of funeral services in accordance with federal regulations. Ensure the completion of all required at-need documents (i.e. general information sheet, release authorization, FTC disclosure, contract with payment terms, payment options, prep instructions, website authorization, next of kin affidavit, etc.). Direct and oversee the administrative coordination of funeral arrangements. Ensure schedules and case management system are updated with service details in a timely manner. Consult with office coordinator to confirm the completion of assigned tasks. Consult with the client family daily until services are completed. Ensure the proper placement and set-up of deceased for viewings. Evaluate the appearance of the deceased and perform necessary adjustments according to the photo and preparation instructions provided by the family. Review schedule and related service details with family prior to first viewing. Accompany family to viewing room and offer prayer prior to first viewing. Demonstrate a willingness to make adjustments to the deceased at the family’s request. Provide detailed instructions (i.e. dress code, arrival time, etc.) to the funeral attendants assigned to assist with funeral ceremony the day prior to service. Coordinate instate assistance, as needed. Ensure the timely arrival and set-up of deceased, flowers, and all necessary equipment at service location. The instate is always 90 minutes prior to the wake. Confirm burial details and committal procedures with clergy assigned to service (i.e. protocol for closing the casket and providing closing instructions, if the minister will travel to the cemetery, etc.). Provide closing instructions following services to include: acknowledgement of clergy/church, burial/repast location, procession safety instructions, etc. Ensure the safe and timely arrival of the procession to final resting place. Provide closing remarks at cemetery. Ensure the signature receipt of pertinent documents/keepsakes (i.e. death certificate, urn, register book, work slips, programs, etc.). Provide after-care support to client family following the conclusion of funeral services. Provide instructions for filing death benefit claims. Provide resources for grief counseling and estate management. Preparation-related responsibilities Coordinate and perform the removal of the deceased from the place of death in a timely manner. Ensure decedents are properly identified/tagged and appropriate paperwork is received for release and preparation of remains. Prepare the body according to the wishes of the family and legal requirements. Embalm assigned cases according to condition of remains (i.e. ensure preservation). Complete decedent intake form and embalming report. Communicate notable details or anticipated challenges regarding the deceased to Observe the condition of the decedent each decedent daily. Track the status of each case in preparation for services (i.e. permission to embalm, photo received, clothing, casket, viewing date, etc.). Dress and casket deceased according to photo and preparation instructions (i.e. natural appearance, proper attention to skin tone, grooming, tapering, etc.). Manage the transfer of deceased to the intended location 24 hours in advance of viewing. Ensure identification tags are consistently checked during preparation process. Manage inventory of equipment and supplies; request additional supplies/equipment as needed. Maintain the cleanliness of the equipment, instruments, and preparation area. Prioritize tasks according to schedules. Perform all tasks with safety in mind; use of masks, lifts, and safety equipment is required at all times. General responsibilities Perform duties with respect for the deceased and the client family. Adhere to applicable federal/state mandated regulations.
