Attorney: NYC Litigation Bureau, Represent/Defend New York State in Civil Litigation (3887)

Assistant Attorney General – Litigation Bureau (New York City) The Office of the New York State Attorney General is seeking experienced litigators to serve as Assistant Attorneys General in the Litigation Bureau (New York City office). The bureau represents and defends the state, its agencies, officials, and employees in civil actions and proceedings in federal and state courts, often involving complex constitutional, statutory, and regulatory questions. Attorneys are assigned to one of three practice groups: Administrative and Regulatory Services Practice Group (ARSPG) – represents commercial, transportation, judicial, environmental, labor, and educational agencies. Health and Human Services Practice Group (HHSPG) – represents public health, mental health, and social services agencies. Law Enforcement Practice Group (LEPG) – represents public safety agencies. In the Litigation Bureau, attorneys are generalists handling all phases of litigation from inception through trial, with frequent opportunities to appear in court. Responsibilities include developing case strategy, drafting briefs, presenting oral arguments, and collaborating with a team of litigators. Qualifications At least three (3) years of post‑graduate civil litigation experience in federal and New York state courts. Excellent legal analysis, writing, editing, and oral advocacy skills. Strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, problem‑solving, and teamwork skills. Comfort and proficiency using technology for legal work, including case management and electronic discovery platforms. Prior complex litigation and trial experience is preferred but not required. Must reside in New York, be admitted to practice law in New York, and be eligible for admission to the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. U.S. citizenship is required by Public Officers Law; a two‑year commitment upon hire is required. Salary and Benefits Salary range: $83,594 – $178,463 plus $4,000 in location pay.
