Overview Accountant (Multiple Positions Available) The City of Roanoke is currently seeking qualified accounting professionals to fill three Accountant positions within the Finance Department. Debt Accountant Capital Accountant Accountant These positions offer an opportunity to contribute to the City's financial stewardship and support municipal operations. Assignments may vary based on the position and area of responsibility. Responsibilities Maintain financial records and perform professional accounting work involving financial reporting, account analysis, reconciliations, journal entry preparation, and other specialized accounting functions. Prepare and verify financial data and reports; assemble statistical and accounting data on request; assist independent auditors as required; and provide information on financial matters to other departments. Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable laws and regulations; assist with budgets and financial reporting as needed. Support debt management (Debt Accountant) and capital asset accounting (Capital Accountant) as assigned; monitor relevant transactions and prepare required disclosures for financial statements. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field (preferred); three to five years of related experience and/or training in accounting, preferably in the public sector; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports and governmental regulations; strong written and verbal communication skills; and ability to work with management and other departments.
