ASL Interpreter & Accessibility Coordinator Location: Maryville College, Maryville, TN 37804 Salary Range: $39,462 - $44,395 Position Purpose: The ASL Interpreter & Accessibility Coordinator supports equitable access to academic instruction, campus programs, and student engagement opportunities for Deaf and hard of hearing students through the provision and coordination of interpreting and accessibility-related services. This position supports institutional compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and related accessibility requirements while advancing student success, access, retention, and engagement. Job Summary The ASL Interpreter & Accessibility Coordinator serves as the primary provider and coordinator of interpreting services for Deaf and hard of hearing students at Maryville College. The role supports classroom instruction, campus events, student engagement opportunities, and institutional accessibility initiatives through direct interpreting services, operational coordination, and collaboration with faculty, staff, students, and external service providers. In addition, the coordinator manages scheduling, continuity of interpreting services, accommodated testing operations, student accommodations, campus outreach, and recruitment and retention efforts. Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree required in American Sign Language & Interpreting, Deaf Studies, Education, Social Work, Human Services, Accessibility Services, or a related field from an accredited college or university. Three (3) to five (5) years of professional interpreting experience for Deaf, Deafblind, and hard of hearing individuals. Experience coordinating interpreting services, accommodations, or accessibility-related support services preferred. Experience working in higher education, student support services, or accessibility/disability resources preferred. Experience collaborating with faculty, staff, students, and community stakeholders in a service-oriented environment. Essential Functions Leadership and Collaboration Collaborate with faculty, staff, and Disability Resources & Accessibility personnel to support implementation of approved accommodations and ensure equitable student access. Serve as a campus resource regarding interpreting services, accessibility practices, and communication access for Deaf and hard of hearing students. Participate in institutional events, orientation programs, outreach initiatives, and community engagement activities related to accessibility and student engagement. Support recruitment and retention efforts for students requiring interpreting and accessibility services. Data, Technology, and Compliance Maintain confidential accommodation, interpreting, scheduling, and student support records in accordance with College policies, FERPA, ADA, and applicable accessibility regulations. Coordinate interpreting schedules and maintain documentation related to service delivery, coverage, and vendor utilization. Assist faculty and staff with accessibility-related practices, including captioning, accessible communication, and accommodation implementation. Utilize institutional software, communication platforms, and assistive technology systems to support accessibility operations and service coordination. Stakeholder and Institutional Support Provide interpreting services for classroom instruction, advising meetings, campus events, orientation activities, theatrical productions, student programming, and other institutional functions as assigned. Respond to student accessibility concerns with professionalism, compassion, discretion, and confidentiality. Coordinate and secure qualified part-time or agency interpreters as needed to ensure continuity of services and minimize accessibility gaps. Support communication and coordination among students, faculty, interpreters, and campus departments regarding accessibility-related services and accommodations. Operations and Technical Oversight Coordinate day-to-day operations related to interpreting and accessibility support services for Deaf and hard of hearing students. Assist with accommodated testing coordination and operational support during peak periods, including midterms, finals, and staff absences. Support note-taking services, assistive technology coordination, and related accessibility service functions. Assist with scheduling, logistics, and operational planning for accessibility-related services and campus access needs. Monitor interpreting coverage needs and proactively address scheduling conflicts or service gaps. Fiscal Oversight Assist with monitoring expenditures related to interpreting services, agency utilization, accommodations, and accessibility support resources. Support documentation, purchasing, reconciliation, and budget tracking activities in accordance with College procedures. Strategic Planning and Sustainability Support continuous improvement efforts related to accessibility services, communication access, and student support practices. Contribute to institutional accessibility planning, outreach, and service development efforts. Assist with identifying operational efficiencies and sustainable approaches to interpreting and accessibility service delivery. Support initiatives that enhance accessibility awareness and inclusive participation across campus programs and activities. Other NOTE: Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty, and students. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and proficiency in expressive and receptive interpreting. Knowledge of Deaf culture, Deafblind communication, accessibility practices, and interpreting ethics. Knowledge of the RID Code of Professional Conduct. Working knowledge of ADA, FERPA, and accessibility compliance requirements. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple schedules, priorities, and service requests simultaneously. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in sensitive situations. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, assistive technology systems, video communication platforms, and scheduling systems. Ability to build collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, community partners, and service providers. Commitment to student support, accessibility, and fostering a respectful and welcoming learning environment. License, Certification, or Registration Necessary Interpreter certification recognized by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) required. Valid driver’s license preferred with ability to travel locally as needed. Work Environment and Physical Requirements Professional office and educational environment with frequent interaction with students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors. Ability to stand or sit for extended periods while interpreting or providing services. Ability to use computers, assistive technology, and communication systems for extended periods. Ability to travel between campus locations and attend occasional evening or weekend activities as required. Must be able to lift/move up to 20 pounds. Ability to Operate Vehicles or Equipment Standard office equipment, including computer, phone, copier, and related technology. Video communication technology and assistive accessibility systems. College-issued or personal vehicles for approved job-related travel as needed.
