Appeals, Writs and Trials Paralegal (Capital Team)

Under the general direction of a Supervising Deputy Attorney General and the Senior Assistant Attorney General, the Senior Legal Analyst (paralegal) will independently perform a wide variety of technically complex duties, including but not limited to: reviewing legal documents and monitoring all filings in capital cases; organizing computerized records and transcripts for use on appeal and in subsequent proceedings, including ensuring they are in usable formats; preparing regular reports on capital case status; contacting governmental agencies for case records, including assisting attorneys in obtaining documents from governmental agencies; preparing documents for the opening and closing of files for internal administrative purposes; performing legal research and analysis of case law, statutes, and legislation; and drafting court pleadings, extension of time requests, and declarations. In addition, the paralegal will be responsible for providing litigation support to attorneys before and during capital trials and capital evidentiary hearings, including securing and preparing witnesses and exhibits, processing subpoenas, preparing and indexing voluminous case materials, assisting with discovery, and tracking and calendaring trial schedules. The paralegal may also develop paralegal training material and train other paralegals. The paralegal must have familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, and may occasionally be required to lift boxes of records weighing up to 25 lbs. The paralegal is expected to be flexible in conforming these duties to the particular needs of the cases and projects to which the paralegal is assigned. The paralegal must also provide occasional backup for other paralegals assisting with appellate cases or federal habeas matters. The paralegal is expected to independently perform the assigned tasks skillfully, professionally, courteously and efficiently, and to exercise initiative and good judgment. Travel may be required.
