Job Title: Structural Welder – 1st Shift Job Description

This role focuses on structural welding in a production shop environment, performing high-quality MIG and flux core welds on carbon steel in multiple positions. You will read and interpret blueprints, lay out and fit components, and complete code-quality welds with clean, accurate work rather than guesswork. The position requires strong technical welding skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely and efficiently on a steady, well-planned workload.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural welding using MIG and flux core processes on carbon steel components in vertical (3G), overhead, horizontal, and flat positions.
• Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and tape measurements to plan layouts, fit-ups, and welding procedures accurately.
• Determine and select appropriate welding equipment, settings, and methods based on job requirements and specifications.
• Set up components for welding according to specifications, including cutting material with powered saws to match precise measurements.
• Align and fit components using calipers, rulers, and other measuring tools, and clamp pieces securely prior to welding.
• Operate angle grinders to prepare, clean, and finish parts that must be welded, and grind welds to required standards.
• Set and adjust welding machine amperage and voltage correctly to achieve proper penetration and weld quality.
• Perform manual or semi-automatic welding in various positions, including vertical, horizontal, and overhead, to meet structural requirements.
• Test and inspect welded surfaces and structures to identify and correct flaws, ensuring welds meet quality and code standards.
• Maintain welding equipment, tools, and workstations in safe, clean, and operational condition to prevent safety hazards.
• Work collaboratively in a structural welding shop within a multi-building campus, supporting production and fabrication needs.
• Follow all safety procedures and participate in the safety program to maintain a safe working environment.

Essential Skills

• Proficient MIG welding skills with the ability to pass a 3G MIG test on 1/4 inch carbon plate in the vertical position.
• Ability to weld confidently in vertical, overhead, horizontal, and flat positions in a structural welding environment.
• At least 8 months of welding experience in a structural welding shop.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and tape measurements accurately.
• Knowledge and ability to set appropriate amperage and voltage on welding machines.
• Experience using tape measures, calipers, rulers, and other measuring tools for layout and fit-up.
• Skill in operating angle grinders for weld preparation and finishing.
• Experience with flux core welding in a structural or industrial setting.
• Capability to test and inspect welded surfaces and structures to identify defects.
• Ability to maintain welding equipment in safe working condition.
• Availability to work 1st shift, Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Structural fitting experience in a fabrication or production environment is preferred.
• Experience in industrial, structural, or production welding and fabrication.
• Comfort working from clean, code-compliant prints and following detailed specifications.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, code-compliant welds.
• Ability to work effectively in a busy shop environment across multiple buildings.
• Flexibility to complete a 1G test for alternative consideration if the 3G test is not passed.

Work Environment

The role is based in a structural welding shop located on a 10-building campus, providing a dedicated environment for structural fabrication and production work. The facility is non-climate-controlled, so temperatures reflect seasonal conditions. Work is performed on 1st shift, Monday through Friday, from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., using MIG and flux core welding machines, powered saws, angle grinders, and standard measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, and rulers. The environment emphasizes safety, consistent production, and working from clean, code-compliant prints.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $25.00/hr.
