Speech Pathologist III HX

Senior Staff Speech Language Pathologist III The Senior Staff Speech Language Pathologist III (Sr SLP III), reports to the Clinical Supervisor/Manager, and provides both direct and indirect patient care services. The Sr SLP III works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, although pediatric and adolescent patients may also be treated. The Sr SLP III demonstrates a solid knowledge base within a wide range of diagnoses including general medicine, orthopedics, neurology, and cardiopulmonary in the adult and/or pediatric setting. Under general supervision and within a specific therapy discipline, the Sr SLP III independently performs complex patient evaluations and therapeutic interventions; serves as a mentor to staff and consultant to other medical professionals in patient evaluations, therapeutic intervention planning or therapeutic intervention requiring discipline specific skills. The Sr SLP III makes recommendations in patient care procedures, protocols or programs related to the discipline specific areas, and instructs therapists and other medical professionals in the theory, application and/or performance of discipline specific skills. While performing job duties, the Sr SLP III may also supervise support personnel as allowed by discipline specific State Practice Acts including Rehabilitation Aides as well as SLP students, or SLP Clinical Fellows. The Sr SLP III actively participates in departmental and organizational programs, including performance improvement activities, clinical education programs, and in-services and staff development activities.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

75% PATIENT CARE RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Performs speech language pathology evaluations on referral by a licensed physician or dentist and administers various neurological, dysphagia, cognitive-linguistic, voice and speech-language tests to determine a patient's functional limitations. B. Independent in performing Modified Barium Swallow Studies and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing procedures. C. Establishes short and long term therapeutic intervention goals based on the results of the evaluation and in consultation with the referring practitioner. D. Develops a therapeutic intervention plan based on results of the evaluation and established goals. Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic intervention programs according to the patient's progress and performance. E. Administers direct patient care, utilizing the full range of speech language pathology techniques as outlined in the Series Concept. F. Delegates and supervises any part of a patient's therapeutic intervention which can be legally and appropriately done by support staff, SLP students and SLP Clinical Fellows. G. Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate. H. Prepares, maintains and transmits accurate patient care records as required including services rendered, progress notes, discharge notes and third party payer reports (e.g. CCS, Medicare, Medi-Cal forms). I. Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, families, department staff, managers and other hospital personnel. J. Reports on patients' progress at various rounds, clinics and case conferences as indicated. K. Demonstrates effective time management skills.

15% EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Participates in staff inservice education program, staff and area meetings. B. Participates in orientation and training of new staff. C. Participates in and provides programs to the community and other hospital departments. D. Participates in clinical instruction of affiliating speech language pathology students and in departmental educational activities related to other health care students (e.g. nursing, medical, pre-speech language pathology) and supervises Speech Language Pathology Clinical Fellows. E. Seeks appropriate opportunities for ongoing education at a minimum of 40 hours of coursework annually. This can be demonstrated by attendance at continuing education courses, Grand Rounds, independent reading, professional activities, campus lectures and mentoring.

10% DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Participates in department quality assurance and performance improvement activities. B. Contributes to the goals of the department by participating in special projects, committees, etc. C. Represents the department as a professional.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations. Masters degree with clinical fellowship and minimum of 3 years of general patient care experience with a minimum of 2 years in a relevant multi-disciplinary specialty setting, within the past 5 years, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 40 hours of professional development activities, 50% of which are continuing education units (CEUs) or relevant academic coursework. The remainder can include mentoring, Grand Rounds, independent reading, etc. Prior experience as a clinical preceptor and prior experience teaching to a wide variety of audiences. Demonstrates ability to consistently meet clinical caseload requirements of a staff level therapist. Ability to recognize signs of distress. Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification. Basic computer skills in word processing and online communication. Proven ability to mentor professional behaviors including interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION

Prior professional clinical experience in an academic medical center environment. Prior experience working with complex neurologic populations. Prior experience working with an interdisciplinary health provider team. Prior experience with teaching, taking on students; mentoring.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

Possession of or proven eligibility for licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California.
