Inpatient Psychiatric NP

Position Overview The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the Upstate Community Hospital inpatient psychiatric unit works in collaboration with an interdisciplinary health care team including an attending psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers. All work is performed in a team-based approach to care. The NP is responsible for the initial evaluation, formulating the appropriate diagnosis and managing the ongoing treatment plan of the acute psychiatric patient, determining appropriateness for discharge, and discharging as needed to the appropriate level of care. The NP should have strong communication skills and be able to coordinate effectively with an interdisciplinary team throughout the hospital, including the admissions area, the inpatient unit, and other parts of the Upstate University Hospital system as necessary. Position Responsibilities Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Conducting complete psychiatric assessments and mental status examinations, determining diagnostic impressions in accordance with the DSM 5 and providing psychiatric treatment including prescribing and administering medications. Performs comprehensive history and examinations, and compiles patient medical data, including behavioral health history. Makes referrals to outside care/ facilities or orders diagnostic/laboratory tests as needed and collects, interprets and documents test results for patients. Participates in treatment teams and develops and implements patient treatment care plans, records progress notes, and assists in provision of continuity of care. Instructs and counsels patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens, emotional problems of daily living, health maintenance, and addiction treatment. The successful applicant will be a member of an interdisciplinary team and will work collaboratively with our physicians in providing psychiatric care and managing psychiatric issues.
