Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

The practice of nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse is defined as performing tasks and responsibilities within the scope of supportive and restorative care. This includes medication administration and specialized tasks under the direction of a Registered Nurse or legally authorized physician or dentist. The LPN will deliver nursing care in structured and routine situations free of scientific complexity. Responsibilities include assistance with activities of daily living. The role involves administration of treatments and routine tasks such as suctioning and urinary catheterizations. The LPN will also prepare patients for surgery, diagnostic tests, treatments, and examinations. Administration of medications within scope of practice is required. The LPN will collect, label, and process specimens accurately. Identification and setup of intravenous equipment and delivery of solutions for infusion through peripheral access devices will be performed. Administering blood or blood products requires special training. The LPN will report pertinent observations, treatments, medications, incidents, and accidents associated with patients to the Registered Nurse. Nursing care delivered will be documented on appropriate forms within the medical record. The LPN will recognize the unit-based model for delivery of nursing care and assume responsibility for assignments delegated by the Registered Nurse. Contributions to nursing care plans in collaboration with other members of the nursing staff are expected. Reinforcement of the patient and family teaching process identified by the Registered Nurse is essential. Emotional support to patients and their families or significant others is a critical aspect of the role. Assistance with the rehabilitation of patients according to the nursing care plan will be provided. The LPN will ensure the physical comfort and safety of the patient. Contributions to patient care conferences are encouraged. Assisting in emergency resuscitative procedures by initiating a Team 7000 call and performing resuscitative procedures such as Basic Cardiac Life Support will be required.
