General Manager - SEO/GEO

- Own SEO and GEO end-to-end, including organic search traffic and AI-citation traffic
- Manage keyword architecture, crawl health, and citation optimization for large language models
- Own strategy, execution, and results across traditional search and AI-driven discovery
- Define clear baselines, goals, and documented outcomes for initiatives
- Report results precisely and quantitatively
- Design and execute rigorous experiments using AI tooling and technical ingenuity
- Direct a team of 3–4 engineers and design support
- Set strategic direction and remove obstacles
- Author PRDs and specifications
- Elevate team performance through clarity, urgency, and high standards
- Report directly to the CEO
- Work with a small team of engineers
- Make Academia.edu’s 64 million papers findable by humans and AI agents
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on SEO experience, ideally gained within highly competitive industries
- Deep, technical understanding of SEO architecture and how data moves through crawling, indexing, and ranking systems
- Demonstrated ability to identify leverage within SEO architecture
- Working command of GEO architecture, including how large language models translate prompts into search queries, evaluate and select SERP results, determine sources to cite, and differ across model families
- Ability to advance projects with urgency and ownership
- Experience directing teams, authoring specifications, structuring experiments, and maintaining high standards
- Proactive integration of AI tools into professional practice
- Well-reasoned, empirically grounded views on what works
- Precise quantitative and qualitative reasoning
- Ability to distinguish meaningful metrics from vanity statistics
- Comfortable conducting technical SEO audits and leading strategic planning sessions
- Ability to work from the San Francisco office 3x a week on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays
- Must be based in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area
