THE POSITION

The City of Rancho Cordova is seeking an Accounting Technician to join the Public Works Department - Finance Division. In this role, you will provide important financial and operational support to the Public Works Department, with a focus on accurate and timely processing of financial transactions, expenditure monitoring, contract support, budgeting, reconciliations, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate is organized, analytical, dependable, and committed to accuracy while managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
About the Role
The Accounting Technician plays an important role in supporting the financial operations of the Public Works Department. The position processes invoices and other financial documents, assists with budget development and monitoring, supports contract and grant management, reconciles expenditures and financial data, and prepares routine and ad hoc reports.
This position also provides support for the City's 2-Year Operating Budget and 5-Year Capital Improvement Plan Budget, including compiling and organizing financial information, coordinating with Public Works staff and other City departments, and entering budget information into the City's budget system.

NON-EXEMPT EMPLOYEE BENEFIT SUMMARY
CALPERS Retirement -The City of Rancho Cordova contracts with the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) for a defined benefit plan. Tier 1: Employees hired prior to December 31, 2012, and "Classic Members" hired subsequently with less than a six (6) month break in service, are provided 2.7% at 55 retirement formula. City employees pay the full 8% of their base pay toward this retirement benefit.
Tier 2: Due to the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (Assembly Bill 340), new Miscellaneous members hired after January 1, 2013, or "Classic Members" with a break in service of more than six (6) months, are eligible for the 2% @ 62 CalPERS retirement formula for fiscal year 2025/2026. Employee contribution rate is 7.75% of PERS-able compensation, up to $186,906. (Note: the employee contribution will change as the cost of the benefit changes, since the employee is required to pay half the normal cost.)
1959 Survivor Benefit (Indexed Level)
The 1959 Survivor Benefit provides a monthly allowance to eligible survivors of members who die while actively employed. The monthly benefit payable to survivors in the Indexed Level increases by 2% each year. Benefit amounts for fiscal year 2025/2026 are $837, $1,673 and $2,510 for 1, 2, or 3 eligible survivors. 457 and 401(a) Deferred Compensation Plan
Cash-in-lieu - If your total health, vision and/or dental premium costs are lower than $300, you may receive the difference as cash in lieu up to a total of $300. If you do not need to purchase medical, dental or vision benefits from the City, you are eligible for a total of $300 cash in lieu per month. Medical Benefits Retiree Health Medical Benefits - CalPERS plans made available, and retiree medical contribution offered toward the cost of the plan. In 2026, the retiree medical contribution is $162.00 per month. The retiree medical contribution will continue to increase until it is equal to the minimum contribution required by CalPERS for the employer to pay on behalf of an employee.

- Substantiates or resolves financial transactions by analyzing and auditing materials, revenue streams, transactions and documents, reconciling statements and transactions, and using initiative and sound independent judgement on procedural problems.
- Pays invoices by verifying transaction information, coding information, scheduling and preparing disbursements, and obtaining authorization of payment.
- Collects revenue by verifying transaction information, computing charges and refunds, preparing and mailing invoices, and notifying customers of delinquent accounts and insufficient payments.
- Performs a variety of accounts receivable duties including reviewing and entering cash receipt transactions into the general ledger, verifying accurate coding, and preparing and sending accounts receivable billing statements; works with other city departments to determine when an account is eligible for a deposit refund and ensures the refund is processed correctly; responds to inquiries, both internal and external, regarding billing matters.
- Prepares financial, statistical, and informational reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends from a variety of documents and composing correspondence from brief instructions.
- Answers accounting procedural questions by researching, interpreting, and explaining accounting policies and regulations.
- Maintains accounting ledgers by verifying and entering account transactions.
• Maintains financial security by following internal accounting controls and completing database backups. - Maintains internal and external customer relations; greets and directs visitors; answers phones; responds to inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.

- Possession of a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Additional college level course work in accounting is desirable.

- A valid California driver's license and acceptable driving record may be required in accordance with the City of Rancho Cordova's Driving Policy. When driving is not an essential function, employees must be able to travel to off-site meetings, trainings, events, and other work-related locations as required to perform the duties of the position.
