Planning Engineer

Planning Engineer | Location: Off-Site | Contract | Hourly Pay Range $51-$61

We are seeking a Mid-Level Planning Engineer to support electric transmission and distribution planning initiatives. This role involves conducting system studies, technical analyses, and developing recommendations to enhance current infrastructure and support long-term utility planning efforts.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform transmission and distribution planning studies to evaluate system capacity, reliability, and future requirements.
• Conduct technical analyses to identify system constraints, potential reliability issues, and infrastructure needs.
• Develop recommendations for system upgrades, including feeders, substations, and transmission lines.
• Support capacity assessments and analyze system impacts related to load growth and changing conditions.
• Develop, maintain, and analyze electrical system models using utility planning software.
• Execute load flow, contingency, voltage, and thermal studies to inform planning decisions.
• Apply established utility planning methodologies and industry best practices to engineering assignments.
• Support annual and long-range electric system planning activities.
• Prepare technical documentation, study reports, and engineering recommendations.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, and project teams to communicate findings and support decision-making.
• Utilize Python programming for data analysis, process automation, and engineering calculations.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of planning models, tools, and methodologies.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in electric transmission and/or distribution planning.
• Proficiency with utility planning software and electric system study methodologies.
• Strong understanding of power system planning concepts, including capacity, reliability, and load growth.
• Experience developing and analyzing electrical system models.
• Proficiency in Python programming for engineering and data analysis.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a utility environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with power system modeling platforms such as PSS/E (PSSE), PowerWorld, or ASPEN.
• Additional experience with utility long-range planning, capacity assessments, and regional transmission planning.
• Familiarity with utility annual planning processes and infrastructure upgrade recommendations.
