Tool Maintenance & Repair Technician (Plastic Injection Molds) 2nd Shift

Job Description

Position Summary: Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and cleaning of molds and tooling components to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime in production. This role involves reading and interpreting work orders, performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting tooling issues, and collaborating with engineering and production teams. The technician will utilize precision measuring tools, maintain accurate records, and uphold a clean, organized work environment while working independently or as part of a team to meet deadlines and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Roles and Responsibilities: • Read and interpret tooling work orders; follow instructions accurately. • Execute preventive and predictive maintenance based on cycle counts, run hours, and tooling condition. • Inspect molds for wear, corrosion, and damage; proactively recommend repairs. • Clean, inspect, and service mold components, including cavities, cores, slides, lifters, ejector systems, cooling circuits, and vents. • Assemble molds to precise tolerances, ensuring proper alignment and functionality of all components. • Verify proper operation of ejection systems, slides, and other moving components prior to returning molds to production. • Respond promptly to production issues; diagnose and resolve tooling-related downtime. • Support continuous improvement of PM programs to extend tool life. • Complete and maintain accurate documentation for tool maintenance and repair tracking in the computer system. • Apply knowledge of hot runner systems during maintenance and troubleshooting. • Use precision measuring equipment (e.g., micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges). • Assist in monitoring and maintaining appropriate inventory levels of mold components. • Maintain tool room equipment, machinery, and overall workspace organization. • Partner with Process Technicians and Engineers to optimize mold performance and resolve defects (e.g., flash, short shots, sticking, dimensional variation). • Work independently with minimal supervision when instructions are clear. • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.

Education and Experience: • High school diploma or equivalent. • Trade school or some college (preferred, but not required) • 5 years of hands-on experience in a tool room involving plastic injection mold repair or mold maintenance. • Experience/Knowledge of hot runner systems and manifolds • 3 years of experience using hand operated tool room equipment. • Prototype tool making and / or Plastic injection processing experience (preferred, but not required)

Skills • Good verbal and written communication skills (able to speak, read and write English fluently) • Knowledge of hydraulic systems. • Knowledge and understanding of mold and die components and their respective characteristics. • Ability to visually inspect tools with high degree of accuracy. • Ability to run machines and equipment safely and efficiently • Ability to read and understand tooling work orders • Ability to trouble shoot issues and repair. • Ability to work closely with others in a collaborative team environment. • Basic computer skills. • Professional demeanor and ethical conduct, including handling confidential information appropriately. • Must be able to work in the U.S.

Physical Demands • Ability to lift 55 pounds. • Requires excessive walking, bending, standing, climbing, and lifting. • Requires alertness, precision, and methodical attributes.
