Senior Mechanical Engineer (HVAC & Plumbing) Location: Hanover, NH. Employment Type: Regular Full Time, Exempt, Onsite only. Salary Range: $129,500 – $161,900. Position Purpose The Senior Mechanical Engineer participates in all aspects of day‑to‑day operations of the Dartmouth College engineering office, providing high‑quality engineering services for a wide range of projects and clients. The role includes review and technical oversight of projects designed by outside consultants, collaboration with Project Managers on in‑house design and renovation projects, work with FO&M shops on system upgrades, improvements and replacements, and assistance with design and analysis of energy‑efficiency projects. Activities may include design reviews, field investigations, existing system assessments, document/archive searches, HVAC and plumbing system design and layout, equipment selection and specification, drafting, code review, calculations and spreadsheet analyses, development of HVAC control system sequences of operation, construction administration services, and continuous improvement of campus Design and Construction Guidelines. Responsibilities Owner’s Engineer – Provide mechanical engineering oversight of consultants studying, designing, constructing, and commissioning new construction and renovation projects in campus buildings, utility plants, and distribution systems. Check compliance with design guidelines, energy performance guidelines, and relevant building codes (ASHRAE, NFPA, IBC, local regulations). Department Liaison – Act as liaison between FO&M and department engineering support requests, troubleshoot and provide technical guidance for maintenance and operations projects, issue work orders as needed. Engineering Design & Construction Administration – Provide design and construction administration services for small mechanical system renovation/renewal projects, prepare bid documents, review shop drawings, attend job meetings, clarify installation details, review as‑built documentation, and conduct field inspections. Campus Design & Construction Guidelines – Participate in continuous improvement of campus design and construction guidelines and high‑performance building design guidelines for designers and contractors on campus. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, architectural engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 10 years mechanical design and drafting experience with an MEP consulting firm. Registered Professional Mechanical Engineer in New Hampshire, or ability to become registered within one year. Minimum of 5 years mechanical drafting experience using AutoCAD. Familiarity with all aspects of HVAC and plumbing design, including load calculations, system sizing, equipment selection, field verification, codes and standards, and controls design. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel. Experience with energy‑efficient HVAC system design and control strategies. Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve problems associated with the operation and maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment. Detail oriented self‑starter with good interpersonal and decision‑making skills. Ability to relate well with a diverse group of constituents and build strong relationships. Strong service orientation and desire to continually improve service and operations. Preferred Qualifications Experience in a college or university environment. Knowledge of International Building Code and experience working with authorities having jurisdiction for compliance requirements. High proficiency with AutoCAD drafting software and 3D drafting software such as Revit. Active LEED BD+C AP certification.
