Heavy Mobile Equipment Repairer

Job Summary This position is located in the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, Fleet and Apparatus Management Division. The mission of the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department is to preserve life and promote health and safety through excellent pre‑hospital treatment and transportation, fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue activities and homeland security awareness. The Heavy Mobile Equipment Repairer is responsible for ensuring that all fleet vehicles remain in a safe, reliable and mission‑ready condition. Their work directly supports operational readiness and public safety. Duties and Responsibilities Inspects equipment at fire stations to determine nature of trouble, makes repairs or conducts equipment maintenance. Arranges for apparatus to be brought to the Fleet Management Division. Overhauls large and small multi‑cylinder diesel and gasoline engines by disassembling and inspecting defective parts, installing and adjusting main bearings, piston rings, pistons, connecting rods and bearings, wrist pins, checking cylinder walls for excessive wear or scoring, grinding, re‑feacing, and resurfacing valves; testing worn crank for out roundness and taper. Utilizes computer software to retrieve data from a database of vehicle information to aid in the diagnosis and repair of vehicle and equipment. Executes complete safety inspections by testing apparatus, vehicles, and small engines. Keeps the firefighting unit in service; makes service calls to fire stations and fireground; diagnoses trouble; and makes repairs. Issues reserve equipment when repairs are not feasible. Notifies supervisor on duty of unusual conditions and takes proper actions as situations dictate. Qualifications and Education Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic). Use of measuring instruments. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading). Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Troubleshooting. License and Certification A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required or must be obtained within eighteen (18) months from the date of appointment at the expense of the candidate/employee. If an incumbent does not obtain a CDL within that period, the incumbent will be terminated. Must possess and maintain a valid CDL with the proper endorsement to operate all departmental apparatus. Working Condition/Environment Works in a garage or from a mobile service vehicle and is required to make repairs under fire ground conditions, exposing the mechanic to toxic fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. Frequently exposed to acids, fuels, and lubricants, which may be irritating to the skin. Uses safety equipment such as breathing apparatus, protective clothing, hard hats, etc., at various times. Subject to cuts, burns, bruises, or sprains while positioning or moving equipment. Subject to discomfort caused by drafts, dust, heat, and fumes while lying on hard floors or ground. Frequently exposed to noise from cutting and hammering operations; typically works on dirty, oily, or greasy systems. Works inside and outside in all types of weather. May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases while working on ambulances and ambulance equipment; the employee must supply tools, other than special tools related to the job. Other Significant Facts Tour of Duty: Monday – Friday 7:00 am–3:30 pm or 3:00 pm to 11:30 p. Pay Plan, Series and Grade: RW‑5803‑08. Duration of Appointment: Career Service – Regular Appointment. Promotional Potential: No known promotion potential. Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFGE 3721. Union dues or other applicable fees may be deducted from your salary. The Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department is a 24‑hour/7‑day operation. Rotating and weekend shift. Position Designation: This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre‑employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks (as applicable). It is also subject to mandatory pre‑employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.
