2027 Future Talent Program - Protein & Structural Chemistry - Intern

This 10-12 week paid internship in Structural Chemistry supports drug discovery by using X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy to determine protein structures. The program runs June-August 2027 at multiple locations and offers hands-on experience in structural biology within Merck's Research and Development division.
Responsibilities
- Perform protein purification, characterization, and pre-crystallization assays using spectroscopic and chromatographic methods
- Conduct crystallization screening, optimization, crystal harvesting, and grid preparation for cryo-EM
- Collect, process, and analyze structural data; interpret protein-ligand complexes critically
- Maintain accurate electronic notebook records and demonstrate safe laboratory practices
- Present findings and attend departmental meetings to understand drug development processes
Requirements
- Pursuing BS/BA or Master's/Ph.D. in related field with research interest in drug discovery
- Completed at least two years of BS/BA or one year of Master's/Ph.D. studies
- Basic laboratory skills: protein purification, characterization, biochemical and biophysical techniques, safe practices
- Currently enrolled in academic program; continuing education for at least one semester after internship
- Available full-time June-August 2027
- Experience with structural biology, protein biochemistry, biophysics, mass spectrometry, or protein expression preferred
- GPA 3.0 or higher preferred; interest in challenging biological macromolecules preferred
Compensation: $39,108-$111,111
