Principal Scientist, Peptide Formulation

Merck's Discovery Pharmaceutical Sciences group seeks a Principal Scientist to lead peptide formulation development, characterization, and early-stage developability assessment. The role bridges preclinical research with clinical candidate selection across multiple peptide modalities and delivery routes.
Responsibilities
- Characterize physicochemical properties and assess developability of peptide candidates
- Conduct early formulation screening and optimization across various administration routes
- Execute laboratory experiments with minimal supervision and generate analytical datasets
- Provide formulation recommendations to partner functions including medicinal chemistry and safety teams
- Mentor junior scientists and contribute to departmental scientific initiatives
Requirements
- PhD degree with minimum 6 years of industrial peptide formulation experience
- Expertise in physicochemical characterization of peptides including oligomer state and fibrillation risk
- Demonstrated problem-solving ability and innovation through publications, presentations, or patents
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills for cross-functional collaboration
- Experience with preclinical or clinical formulation development preferred
- Background in drug delivery technology helpful
Compensation: $176,200-$277,300 base
