Principal Scientist, Antibody Discovery Innovation

Merck seeks a Principal Scientist to lead antibody discovery innovation in South San Francisco. The role requires deep expertise in immunization-based antibody discovery, B-cell biology, and immunogen design to advance therapeutic programs and develop next-generation discovery platforms.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership for in vivo antibody discovery operations, innovation, and external partnerships
- Propose and lead technology development initiatives to improve candidate quality and reduce timelines
- Lead cross-functional discovery project teams in collaboration with therapeutic area scientists
- Set and deliver strategic goals across Discovery Biologics in pipeline advancement and scientific excellence
- Foster high-performance culture emphasizing collaboration, accountability, and inclusive behaviors
Requirements
- Ph.D. in biophysics, biochemistry, structural biology, or related discipline with 8+ years industry experience
- Extensive antibody drug discovery experience supporting therapeutic programs
- Deep knowledge of adaptive immunity and B-cell biology
- Proven track record leading therapeutic antibody discovery campaigns and high-performance teams
- Established external reputation through publications, presentations, or scientific community engagement
- Experience with multiple hit-finding platforms such as high-throughput microfluidics and NGS
- Strong communication, collaboration, and multi-project management skills
Compensation: $176,200–$277,300 base
