Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) Profession: Nursing Specialty: Neuro Med-Surg Acute Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience required License: Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated Certifications: BLS, NIHSS required Must-Have: - Level 1 trauma experience - Previous travel experience (no first-time travelers) - Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit - Experience with titrating heparin drips Description: This is a neuro medical-surgical acute nursing position. The unit has a 54-bed capacity, including two semi-private rooms. Patient-nurse ratios for day shifts are 1:4-5, and 1:5-6 for night shifts. Common patient diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizures, brain tumors, and head injuries, as well as some medical overflow. RNs are required to titrate drips, particularly heparin, based on PTT results. A charge nurse and a house supervisor are available on each shift. Charge nurses do not typically take assignments unless staffing is short. Patient care techs are present on the unit, with ratios of 1:9-10 during the day and evening shifts, and 1:10-12 at night. Registered nurses are required to perform troubleshooting on respiratory equipment in rare cases. Telemetry services are house-wide, and nurses do not need to read strips monitored by the Phillips system. The position requires every other weekend work and holiday shifts. Floating with staff may be required, but only skills within competence will be utilized outside the general unit. Scrubs do not have a color requirement, but tattoos must be covered while on duty. Unit-specific orientation includes training with an educator and a preceptor while caring for patients.
