The Center for Laboratory Sciences (CLS) is based on the Richmond Campus which employs more than 1,200 people. The Richmond Campus is a flat, 29-acre property located in Richmond's Marina Bay. The CLS serves to protect and promote the health of all Californians through innovative and collaborative infectious disease and environmental testing, including provision of investigation and surveillance activities which form the basis of disease response and prevention. Job Description And Duties This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by performing a variety of investigations, monitoring, and inspection activities for the purpose of identifying employee health and safety and facility infrastructure problems. The Senior Industrial Hygienist (SIH) working as the CLS laboratory certified Industrial Hygienist, collaborates with laboratory managers and is the subject matter expert for hygiene practices and standards on the Laboratory Practices Health and Safety Committee to evaluate identified workplace hazards and laboratory practices to achieve consensus on remedial action when occupational hazards are detected. The position has authority to order cessation of work or shut down operations across CLS programs and provide consultation for Richmond Campus should any hazard to employees exist. Works collaboratively with CLS leadership, divisions, and branches, and Richmond Campus health and safety representatives to ensure occupational health and safety matters are in compliance; makes recommendations for the prevention, elimination, or control of hazards; and identifies and assists with training matters as necessary. Up to 5% travel may be required to attend conferences, trainings, and workshops. The incumbent works under the general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor II, Chief of the LabQuality, Safety & Compliance Section. Special Requirements License/Certification: Possession of a Certificate in the Comprehensive Practice of Industrial Hygiene issued by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, or a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate: Previous work in environmental or laboratory health and safety, inspections, and auditing. Experience designing and implementing comprehensive hazardous waste management plans. Skill in developing quality improvement plans for laboratory health and safety. Ability to develop waste reduction plans and upcycling practices in laboratory settings. Knowledge of engineered safety controls, personal protective equipment, and respirator fit testing. Knowledge of toxic substances, occupational health and safety rules, standards, and regulations. Professional principles and practices of industrial hygiene, environmental health, public health and State laws, rules, and regulations. Techniques and skill in preparing and presenting trainings focused on industrial hygiene subject matter. Background in basic chemistry and biology. Skills with databases and/or tools for managing information.
