Maine Assistance Program for Lawyers & Judges Executive Director Search The Maine Assistance Program for Lawyers & Judges (MAP) is seeking a new Executive Director to assume responsibility for the operation of the program. Applicants must be highly motivated, independent, empathetic, and passionate about working with individuals with mental health issues, substance use issues, or aging/cognitive decline issues. Background The Maine Assistance Program for Lawyers & Judges, often referred to as MAP, was created in 2002 by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court for the purpose of protecting the public from harm caused by impaired members of the legal profession. To meet this goal, MAP provides free and confidential assistance to Maine attorneys, judges, University of Maine School of Law students, and applicants to the Maine Bar for issues that might adversely affect their professional competence or personal life, including (but not limited to) depression, substance use disorders, anxiety, burnout, addictive behaviors, and age-related cognitive changes. MAP has undergone rapid expansion in recent years and now serves more participants than ever before. Responsibilities The Director oversees the program and provides 24/7 on-call assistance to attorneys and judges needing advice, arrangements for treatment, hospitalization, or other matters. Other responsibilities include: Meet with MAP’s Governing Commission at least quarterly and work collaboratively to set strategic goals for MAP and develop implementation plans to achieve those goals. Develop and facilitate MAP-sponsored recovery and mental health peer support groups. Administer MAP’s voluntary monitoring program, which entails drafting and negotiating monitoring agreements, interfacing with the Maine Boards of Bar Overseers and Bar Examiners and ensuring monitoree compliance with the agreement terms. Oversee and expand the existing peer support network of volunteer lawyers, law students, and judges. Educate the bench, bar, and public about issues relating to the impairment of legal professionals and the importance of maintaining well-being through regularly conducted CLEs, workshops, trainings, and other activities as needed. Supervise and work closely with MAP’s Clinical Director. The position requires occasional out-of-state travel and participation in various seminars and conferences associated with lawyer assistance programs. Handle MAP’s administrative needs, including developing promotional materials and administering the website. The anticipated start time for this role is September or October 2026. Due to the importance of continuity of relationships and services, a five-year commitment is expected. Education A Juris Doctorate is preferred, but a qualified candidate with a master’s or doctoral degree in a human services field may also be considered. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Familiarity with the stresses and pressures associated with the practice of law. Education or experience with mental health or substance use disorders in professionals. (Understanding of or lived experience with 12-step or other recovery programs is a plus.) Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Empathetic, non-judgmental demeanor, and outstanding listening skills. Excellent writing and oral presentation skills. Ability to work within a highly confidential environment and maintain tact, discretion, and sound judgment. Willingness to attend various bench and bar functions. Valid driver’s license and ability to drive anywhere in Maine on short notice. Willingness and ability to travel to conferences held throughout the United States. Ability to work alone from home without clerical support. Familiarity with use of Zoom or other remote work platforms. High degree of moral character, integrity, and professionalism. Ability to remain calm and focused during crisis situations. Compensation Base salary of $85,000, negotiable depending upon experience and qualifications.
