Position Information: Classification Title University Grants Pro II; FLSA Exempt; FTE 1.00 Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent and 2 years of professional experience. Preferred Qualifications: See responsibilities below. Position Summary: Sponsored Projects Administration, Pre-Award, is the central pre-award office at UGA. The office manages a portfolio of awards/proposals. Work is highly professional and technical, involving review and processing of grant proposals, negotiation of awards and contracts, and post-award non-financial administrative duties. This position serves on the contract team and will join SPA staff to manage complex sponsors, contracts, and authorities. The Grants Officer I mentors others in SPA and may train newer employees. The role requires independent management of workload, meeting deadlines and performance metrics, and adherence to SPA Customer Service Standards. The employee will negotiate contracts and may have signatory authority to bind the University. Knowledge, Skills, and/or Competencies: High level of knowledge of institutional policies and procedures pertaining to external funding, finance, and administration. Established knowledge of contract negotiations and ability to draft agreements. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with university personnel, state and federal agencies, and private organizations on complex matters. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with PIs and other UGA personnel about a limited array of research administration topics. Work under varying levels of supervision in a deadline-oriented environment. Strong commitment to excellent customer service and the ability to manage the desk as well as mentor/train newer employees. Duties/Responsibilities: Reviews grant contracts for compliance with federal, state, sponsor rules, and UGA policies; mentors a Grants Specialist I-III in the same. Manages contracts from pre-award through project close-out; mentors a Grants Specialist I-III. Ensures compliance with agency guidelines and applicable regulations (e.g., animal/human subjects, debarment, drug-free workplace) and accuracy of proposal budgets including indirect costs and subcontracts. Interprets policies and guidelines for faculty and staff; clarifies diverse agency requirements. Negotiates and authorizes contracts on behalf of UGA or its research foundation; may defer to Legal Affairs and Innovation Gateway on some issues. Serves as liaison between funding agencies and faculty regarding complex questions; performs related duties as assigned.
