Job Description

The fabricator will lead fabrication, welding, and machining activities to modify and integrate engines into marine applications. This role focuses on cutting and forming steel, building custom brackets, and using a variety of shop tools and equipment to support engine retrofits and marine system integrations. The position is ideal for someone with strong machine shop experience who enjoys hands-on work, problem-solving, and collaborating closely with technical teams in a dynamic, project-based environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead all fabrication, welding, and machining procedures required to modify engines and components for marine applications.
• Cut steel, fabricate and install custom brackets, and perform structural modifications as needed for boat and recreational vehicle projects.
• Operate shop tools and equipment such as drill presses, mills, lathes, plasma cutters, grinders, and other machining tools to produce precise parts and assemblies.
• Perform retrofits and integrate mechanical and electrical components into marine systems, ensuring proper fit, function, and reliability.
• Assist with rigging activities, including preparing boats and equipment for testing, transport, and demonstrations.
• Work with combustible engines, including GM-based engines, to support modifications, installations, and system integrations.
• Support electrical and wire harness work as needed to ensure proper connection and operation of integrated systems.
• Participate in trailering and transporting large loads to designated areas safely and in compliance with applicable regulations.
• Drive boats for testing purposes, including hot, cold, and wet testing in a variety of conditions.
• Travel to designated locations to assist with presentations, customer demonstrations, and on-site testing activities.
• Collaborate closely with engineering staff on development projects, calibration work, and custom boat builds.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment, following best practices for tool use, equipment care, and workspace housekeeping.
• Demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude and continuously look for ways to support the team and improve processes.
• Adhere to all safety guidelines and maintain a clean driving record while operating company vehicles and equipment.

Essential Skills

• Strong fabrication skills, including cutting steel and building custom brackets for mechanical systems.
• Proficiency in MIG and TIG welding with at least 3+ years of experience in fabrication, TIG, MIG, and welding.
• Minimum of 3+ years working in a machine shop setting, with hands-on experience using shop tools and machining equipment.
• Ability to operate drill presses, mills, lathes, plasma cutters, grinders, and other common machine shop tools.
• Knowledge of combustible engines and their mechanical and electrical systems, particularly in automotive or marine applications.
• Mechanical aptitude with the ability to understand and work with automotive and marine systems.
• Experience with electrical and wire harness work sufficient to support integration and troubleshooting activities.
• Clean driving record and the ability to safely operate vehicles for trailering and transport of large loads.
• Possession of, or willingness and ability to obtain, a chauffeur's license.
• Demonstrated experience in both fabrication and welding, with the ability to perform these tasks independently and to a high standard.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in a machine shop environment, ideally supporting custom or prototype work.
• Experience working with automotive and marine applications, including engine installations and system integrations.
• Comfort operating forklifts; forklift operator experience is a plus.
• Experience supporting testing activities such as hot, cold, and wet testing of mechanical systems.
• Ability to collaborate closely with engineers and technicians on development, calibration, and custom build projects.
• Strong organizational skills and commitment to shop cleanliness and order.
• Self-motivated mindset with a focus on continuous contribution to team goals.
• Willingness to travel for presentations, customer demonstrations, and off-site testing when required.

The role involves working in a testing environment where hot, cold, and wet testing may occur on any given day, including time spent on the water testing boats. The schedule typically avoids weekend and overtime work while at the shop, though additional hours may be required when traveling for testing or presentations. This is a Contract position based out of CHESTERFIELD, MI.

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $32.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
