Executive Director

Executive Director (Full-Time, Salaried) Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve is a 13-acre privately owned botanical garden open to the public for free. Located in the heart of Spartanburg, SC our garden is dedicated to horticultural education, conservation, and community engagement. A beloved community institution, Hatcher provides a welcoming green space for visitors of all ages while serving as a hub for environmental stewardship and civic partnership. Position Summary The Executive Director is the senior leader of the organization, responsible for overall organizational leadership, strategic plan adherence, fundraising, financial oversight, public relations, donor stewardship, supervision of staff, and cultivation of relationships with community volunteers. The Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors to advance the mission, visibility, and long-term sustainability of the organization. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree preferred in nonprofit management, business administration, communications, horticulture, public administration, or related field. Demonstrated experience in nonprofit leadership and fundraising. Demonstrated ability to build and sustain relationships with individual donors, foundations, and community partners. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience with grant writing and donor relations. Competency with QuickBooks and/or Raiser’s Edge software. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to work on occasional evenings and weekends for events and donor activities. Fundraising and Development Cultivate and solicit individual, corporate, and foundation donors. Build and sustain relationships with donors, sponsors, and community partners through regular, meaningful engagement. Prepare and present grant applications, sponsorship proposals, and fundraising presentations. Assist with planning and execution of fundraising events and campaigns. Organizational Leadership Provide leadership and oversight for all garden operations, programs, and administrative functions. Implement policies and strategic initiatives established by the Board of Directors. Supervise and evaluate staff members and coordinate departmental operations. Foster a positive organizational culture among staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners. Financial Management Oversee organizational budgeting and financial reporting. Maintain proficiency in QuickBooks and/or Raiser’s Edge software. Review deposits, expenditures, and financial procedures for accuracy and accountability. Work collaboratively with accountants, auditors, and the Board Treasurer. Administrative and Technology Responsibilities Maintain advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Prepare reports, correspondence, presentations, and organizational documents. Oversee donor databases and records management systems. Public Relations and Visitor Engagement Serve as a public ambassador for the Garden at meetings, civic events, and community functions. Lead tours for donors, sponsors, and special guests with knowledge of garden history, horticultural collections, structures, and special features. Support marketing, communications, and public outreach efforts. Board Relations Attend Board and committee meetings as requested. Prepare reports and recommendations for Board review. Assist with strategic planning and policy development. Physical Requirements Ability to walk garden grounds and conduct outdoor tours.
