Position Overview The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of California, Los Angeles anticipates openings throughout the year for appointments in the Project Scientist Series. Positions may be at the level of Assistant, Associate, or Full Rank Project Scientist, depending on the candidate’s qualifications. Criteria for the Project Scientist Series The Project Scientist Series makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project related to Neurosurgery. Project Scientists carry out research or creative programs under the supervision of a member of the Professor or Professional Research Series. They are expected to have a broad range of knowledge and competency, with appointment and advancement dependent on technical contributions made to research. Duties The position will perform independent research under the direction of the Principal Investigator. The appointee will supervise graduate and undergraduate student researchers, prepare manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, and assist with the preparation of grant proposals. Additional Duties Work on multiple projects efficiently and effectively. Work independently on scientific projects. Assist with the preparation of grant proposals. Prepare manuscripts for publication in top‑tier scientific journals. Communicate well with other scientists worldwide. Have five years of research experience in an academic setting or equivalent. Have experience in small animal surgical procedures, if required. Have experience in laboratory procedures and data processing required in the study. Report directly to the Principal Investigator and successfully carry out experiments and analyze data with minimal supervision. Maintain equipment, if needed. Help and train personnel in data analysis and contribute to the design and execution of other laboratory members’ experiments. Requirements Ph.D. in a relevant field. Salary and Benefits The project scientist is an academic non‑faculty position. Initial appointments are short‑term, typically one year, and renewal is based on job performance, programmatic need, and availability of funding. Positions may be full or part‑time and may be with or without salary. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The salary range for this position is $79,400 to $150,800, depending on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and the division’s requirements.
