The Salvation Army’s Divisional Headquarters is hiring an Associate Director of Gift Planning. Location : 25 Shawmut Rd., Canton, MA Hours/week : 35 hours per week (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., with additional hours as required for exempt positions) Exemption : Exempt Pay Range : $87,884.88 – $114,297 Starting pay varies depending on experience and qualifications. Primary responsibilities include cultivation and completion of both irrevocable and revocable planned gifts for The Salvation Army. The Associate Director works under the direct supervision of the Director of Gift Planning. Duties & Responsibilities Professional cultivation, promotion, and closure of planned gifts within and for the benefit of the Division or corps/units within the Division. Provide proper estate and gift‑planning education and counsel to donors, prospects, volunteers and volunteer groups, Salvation Army advisory boards and Salvation Army officers and employees who require such knowledge for fulfillment of their respective responsibilities. Advise all donors prior to the completion of each gift, regardless of the type, of The Salvation Army’s allocation procedures governing the distribution of unrestricted gifts and of all designation options through which they may specify their gifts for local or restricted applications. The decision to leave a gift unrestricted or to designate it for any special or local use must be that of the donor. Work in a professional, cooperative, and productive manner with other development staff and Divisional Headquarters personnel. Provide monthly written reports to the Director of Gift Planning and to the Territorial Office of Special Gifts summarizing activities and results of the preceding month, as well as plans for continuing efforts during the current month. All such reports shall be goal‑oriented in terms of plans, progress, and production. In consultation with the Director of Gift Planning, agree on program and gift production goals for the Associate Director’s own work and organize priorities and activities toward the achievement of gift production objectives. It is expected that the Associate Director will spend at least half of the time visiting donors and prospects in their homes, offices, or other private places to discuss their planned‑giving desires. Devote full time to Gift Planning responsibilities. Relationship with Territorial Headquarters The Associate Director shall receive orientation and training at the time of employment by representatives of Territorial Headquarters. The Associate Director shall attend such annual programs and strategy conferences for Divisional Gift Planning professionals as scheduled by the Territorial Community Relations and Development Secretary. The Associate Director, subject to the approval of the Director of Gift Planning, shall attend such other education and training programs as may be deemed appropriate and as provided for in the operating budget. The Associate Director shall establish and maintain membership in professional organizations as recommended by the Director of Gift Planning and/or Territorial Director of Special Gifts subject to existing policy and budget provision. The Territorial Director of Special Gifts staff shall have access to the Associate Director through the Director of Gift Planning. Territorial Office of Special Gifts staff shall serve as the territorial headquarters’ representatives to ensure program quality. Organizational Responsibilities Adhere to all policies as defined in the Division’s Employment Manual for Professional Employees and in the employment agreement. Be knowledgeable and guided by the financial policies set forth in The Salvation Army Territorial General and Special Fiscal Policies governing Gifts by Will, Trust, or Similar Instrument. Refrain from any activity that might lead to a conflict of interest such as dealing in securities, real estate, life insurance, etc. Where such experience and expertise may be carried forward from previous employment, the individual will not involve themselves in such transactions while representing The Salvation Army or use any Salvation Army contacts to make sales for personal profit. Maintain a high level of professional competence, integrity, credibility, and enthusiasm. Maintain records of contacts and telephone logs with donors and prospects as part of the tracking and donor cultivation process. Participate in department meetings as required or requested. Refrain from signing any document on behalf of The Salvation Army and from investing or subordinating funds belonging to any donor, any prospect, or The Salvation Army. Refrain from pursuit or acceptance of any direct personal gain as a result of donor or prospect contacts. Accept no gratuities or gifts and allow no bequests or remainder interests to be designated to any individual representing The Salvation Army. Understand that compensation for this position shall be on a stated salary only. No remuneration shall be based on a percentage of funds raised or on any other arrangement that might be construed as a commission. In all matters involving donors or prospective donors, the interests of those parties shall take precedence over those of The Salvation Army. No program, agreement, trust, contact or commitment shall be urged upon a donor that would benefit The Salvation Army at the expense of the donor. The Salvation Army shall exercise extreme caution against the use of high‑pressure sales techniques or coercion when dealing with donors or prospects. All information concerning donors or prospects shall be maintained in strict confidence and become the property of The Salvation Army. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree. Knowledge of planned giving vehicles. Five or more years of experience in a planned‑giving‑centric or philanthropic advisory role, preferably with a mission‑driven organization. Demonstrated record of cultivating and closing gifts. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong affinity for the ministry of The Salvation Army. Work Experience & Certifications Have or earn within three years from hire date a certification applicable to planned giving, such as CFP®, JD, CAP®, CFA, CGPA, CGPP or other designation approved by the Territorial Director of Special Gifts. Must have and maintain a valid automobile operator’s license and an acceptable driving record at the time of hire.
