- Responsible for customer safety and uniformly enforcing pool safety rules.
- Be familiar with each and every pool rule and why it should be enforced.
- Ensure that customers are swimming in water that they are capable of swimming in. If a customer appears to be struggling in deep water, ask them to demonstrate their swimming abilities to you. If their skills are not satisfactory, ask the customer to remain in shallow water.
- Discipline customers as needed. Any discipline deemed necessary beyond sitting out of the water for a short period of time must be brought to the attention of the manager or assistant manager on duty.
- Assist with facility maintenance. Each employee is required to clean bathrooms, pick up litter, clean trash cans, skim the pool or perform any other maintenance duty requested by the pool manager or assistant manager.
- Perform hourly chemical checks as directed by management.
- Assist in the pool office as needed to answer phones or assist customers
- Respond quickly to all emergency situations while on or off stand. Know the emergency response plan and be able to respond accordingly. Be familiar and able to perform rescue techniques as set forth by the American Red Cross
- File all records in a timely manner. Incident reports and any other paper work should be turned into the office within 24 hours.
- Assist with opening and closing procedures.

- Greet the public in a cheerful and friendly manner.
- Must be able to learn the point of sale system and to complete various written reports concerning participation, revenue generation, etc.
- Take admission fees from customers and give appropriate change.
- Responsible for checking receipts of those patrons who request to leave and return later.

Lifeguard Service Standards
- Ensure maximum safety of all patrons in the aquatics facility. Take preventative measures to decrease the probability that aquatics incidents will occur.
- Always be consistent, fair, and courteous when enforcing the General Rules and Regulations outlined in this manual. If necessary, provide a justification for the rule. If the patron has additional questions or becomes unsatisfied, call upon Management to assist you. Remember YOUR primary responsibility is to ensure swimmer safety.
- Assist Management in maintaining a safe, clean, and orderly facility. Periodically check the aquatics facility for unsanitary and unsafe conditions. Check the aquatics equipment to ensure its safety. If repairs are needed or a potentially hazardous condition arises, inform Management immediately.
- Perform ALL of the duties assigned to the position of Lifeguard. Perform the duties exactly as they are outlined in this manual. In addition, be prepared to accept and perform any additional duties assigned by Management.
- Be prepared for any problems or emergency situations. Demonstrate to the public a high regard for professionalism, a positive attitude, and the utmost confidence in your rescue skills and First Aid/CPR knowledge.
- Be alert and ready to render aid to swimmers and patrons in trouble. Respond immediately to incidents in the water, on the deck, in the diving area and in the slide areas.
- Perform assists, rescues and administer CPR and First Aid in the manner that you were trained. ALWAYS act with extreme care and use good judgment!
- Know and properly follow the established emergency action plan (EAP).
- Lifeguards can request a questionable swimmer to take a "swim test". If the swimmer refuses or fails the test, the lifeguard can ask the swimmer to stay in the shallow water area.
- Maintain order, anticipate problems and take the necessary steps to prevent or defuse problems. If a complaint arises from the circumstance, respond to it in a serious manner! If you cannot resolve the problem, get Management to assist you. It is important to bring complaints and even concerns to the attention of Management.
- Inform Management of any patron who should be denied admission or asked to leave the facility due to health, conduct, or safety reasons. Remember the Manager/Assistant Manager has the authority to eject patrons.
- Assist Management with monitoring Group Reservations (i.e. Day Cares). Examine if the Group Supervisors are watching their students. Make sure that the Group members are wearing their armbands and that they are not monopolizing any portion of the pool area. Inform Management if any problems or inconsistencies arise.
- Always be polite, helpful and friendly to all patrons, co-workers and other employees.
- Maintain the station rotation in a prompt and proper fashion. Be aware of who and when you "bump". Remember, give the other lifeguards the treatment and respect that you wish to receive.
- While watching the pool area, Lifeguards need to be easily identified. Therefore, Lifeguards may NOT wrap their towels around them (i.e., their waist or torso) while they are supervising the pool area in rotation.
- The guardroom should ALWAYS be kept in a clean, neat and in an orderly condition. The trash should be emptied on a nightly basis. In addition, it is important to keep the refrigerator clean and free of spoiled food.
- A Lifeguard's primary responsibility is to watch the swimmers in their "zone" and ensure their safety. Neither watching sunbathers nor amusing them is a part of your job description.
- It is a Lifeguard's responsibility to attend all pre-season and in-service training sessions, as scheduled.
- Lifeguards are responsible for knowing and complying with all of the City of Arlington's Aquatics Division Rules and Regulations. A detailed list of the rules and regulations are provided in this manual.
- Accept and perform any additional responsibilities or duties that are assigned by Management Staff.
- While off stand, staff will remain in the pool office unless engaged in facility cleaning, maintenance or interacting with customers.
Pre-employment screening includes a criminal background check and drug/alcohol testing.
