Youth Navigation Center-Career Pathway Navigator (L1)

New Horizons, a nonprofit serving special needs adults in the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Ventura and Glendale, California, seeks a self‑starter to be a Youth Navigation‑Career Pathway Navigator. Flexible availability: 20–29 hours a week (may include weekends). Rate: $21–$22 per hour.
SUMMARY
The Career Pathway Navigator plays a key role in developing and supporting New Horizon’s Youth Navigation Center programs. Guided by student preferences, services may be delivered in school settings, NH Campus, within the community, at their home, and/or remotely. All programs are designed and led with a person‑centered approach, ensuring that each young adult’s voice, choice, and goals are at the heart of their experience. The Navigator fosters a welcoming, engaging, and outcome‑oriented environment for young adults with disabilities and provides support and backup for other Youth Navigation programs as needed. Pre‑Employment Services Support job exploration, postsecondary counseling, workplace readiness training, self‑advocacy training, and paid student work‑experience. Facilitate the Pre‑Employment Transition Services Sequencing Guide. Facilitate all activities that align with student interests, strengths, and goals. Communicate with family, students, and supervisors about student schedule; all changes and updates must be reported to supervisor. Paid Student‑Work Experience Coordinated and secured student job site placements to fulfill work experience requirements. Completed DOR reports: ISP Report, 1st report/30 hours, 2nd Report/30 hours, and 3rd Report/40 hours (100 hours). Tracked student weekly timesheet. Worksite development. Maintained communication with all sources of support: job site manager, job coaches, parents, supervisors, etc. Camp CapAbility and Youth Leadership Forum (Summer) Plan and deliver engaging summer activities that foster leadership, teamwork, and self‑advocacy. Supervise outings, workshops, and community‑based activities that promote inclusion and independence. Facilitate group discussions and reflection activities that support personal growth. Mentor students in practicing social skills and building peer relationships. Digital Literacy Playbook Deliver engaging and accessible training modules: privacy & safety, communication skills, and relationship building that equip participants with knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world safely, responsibly, and effectively. Facilitate discussion on online safety, effective communication, and professional relationship building. Support learners in developing safe online habits that protect personal data and digital identity. Travel Training Assess each student’s and class’s transportation needs, comfort level, and goals to create individualized training plans. Teach students and classes how to safely use public transportation (bus, metro, paratransit) and pedestrian routes. Provide real‑world practice trips in the community, modeling safety and problem‑solving strategies. Collaborate with schools to reinforce travel skills across settings. Monitor progress and adapt training methods to ensure skill mastery and increased independence. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Complete daily notes per Youth services program on Knack. Complete and follow weekly schedule as approved by manager. Attend all meetings as directed/required. Support promotion of NH so that high‑school graduates are aware of NH and its potential programs and services in the community. Encourage trainees to advocate for themselves and others. Partner with others to accomplish the agency’s mission. Maintain the highest professional and ethical standards. Maintain proficiency in computer applications and databases required for this position. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements Must speak English. High school diploma. Experience with special needs/developmental disabilities (preferred). Driver’s license for 3+ years required; must be at least 21 years of age. Authorized to work in the United States. Qualifications Problem‑solving skills and the ability to follow through on a situation to its logical end. Attention to detail and good judgment, making sound decisions regarding consumer health and safety. Excellent time management and ability to organize, administer, and coordinate a program decisively. Computer proficiency in Outlook, Word, and ability to learn other applications as needed. Ability to write in English reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; effectively present information in English and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Access to personal vehicle, proof of vehicular insurance, a valid California Driver’s License, and a driving record acceptable to the agency’s insurance carrier. Belief in the agency philosophy and the dignity of the individual; ability to work cooperatively and supportively with staff, consumers, and the community. Education and/or Experience High school diploma or equivalent required; minimum one year of experience working with adults with developmental disabilities. Experience in job development, vocational rehabilitation, or a related field strongly preferred. Language Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Good verbal and written communication skills required. Bilingual in Spanish preferred. Physical Demands Regularly required to walk and talk or hear; frequently required to reach with hands and arms; occasionally required to stand, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; taste or smell; may occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Work Environment Community‑based position requiring flexibility to work at various community settings, partner locations, training sites, and other off‑site environments. The position may also involve providing transportation to members using personal vehicle in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
