Community Organizer

Make the Road States (MRstates) is the national home for the second-generation Make the Road family of organizations in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Nevada, this in addition to New York, that serves to uplift the voices of working-class, immigrants, women, LGBTQIA people, and people of color across the Make the Roads umbrella. From an operational spectrum it serves as the Finance and Human Resources Compliance Officers for the umbrella at large.

Make the Road Nevada (MRNV), a 501(c)(3) organization, holds a vision for Nevada that begins with building a strong grassroots foundation in Las Vegas and it ends with elevating the power of working-class immigrant communities in every community around the state. We do this by informing, empowering, and mobilizing our community to take action on important issues that directly affect their families and loved ones.

Make the Road Action (MRA), a 501(c)(4) organization is committed to building power for justice in immigrant and low-income working-class communities of color. MRA operates in five states - New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. We work to create social change, connect voters to the candidates and issues that are most important to them, and work hands-on in a fast-paced environment to create long-term impact in the communities that need it most.


Current Opening:

The Community Organizer will be responsible for recruiting and engaging members by developing them into lead on campaigns around local, state, and federal issues. MRNV is currently negotiating their first Collective Bargaining Agreement; this position will be a union position.


The primary focus of this position will be organizing low-income and immigrant community members to effectively engage in collective action in order to empower members to make progress on fights including, but not limited to, housing, immigrant rights, immigration reform, wages, working conditions, healthcare, reproductive rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and dismantling systemic racism. Primary campaign assignment, focus area, and team may shift based on organizational needs, campaign cycles, and available funding.

Key Responsibilities but not limited to:

Community Organizing and Campaign Building

• Responsible for leading base-building efforts and recruiting new members for MRNV/MRA.
• Maintain positive and professional interpersonal relationships with internal and external partnerships on behalf of MRNV/MRA.
• Support organizing committee and general member meetings to promote civic participation and leadership development of members and allies.
• In collaboration with their supervisor, develop and maintain an individual work plan, campaign plan, and organizational goals.
• Record and report up-to-date metrics as part of individual work plan, campaign plans, and organizational goals.
• Coordinate and participate in phonebanking, canvassing, and fieldwork with base organizers.
• Support with grant deliverables as needed.
• Member and community engagement, including but not limited to phone banking, staffing events, canvassing, and text banking
• Follow up with community members interested in joining Make the Road Nevada and use the organization's member engagement funnel to build relationships, deepen engagement, and support their path from initial contact to active membership
• Support organizing staff in Reno and other Nevada regions as assigned, including coverage during campaign surges, trainings, and statewide mobilizations.
• Support grant and contract deliverables, including data collection, reporting, and documentation tied to specific funding sources, in addition to general grant support already listed.
• Collaborate with their supervisor to assist in training and peer support for new organizing staff.

Member Organizing and Leadership Development

• Recruit and mobilize local community members to become members of MRNV/MRA and be actively involved in all campaigns, including attending and participating in meetings, actions, and events.
• Collaborate with the broader organizing team to plan and run general membership meetings and committee meetings.
• Organize and develop informed, confident member-leaders who themselves can recruit, mobilize, and organize others to help lead the organizing work
• Organize members to fill volunteer roles in the immigration committee meeting and put them on a pathway to the Make the Road Nevada leadership ladder.

Foster and Manage Public Relationships:

• Represent and advocate on behalf of MRNV/MRA members in coalition spaces as well as with elected officials and government agencies
• Support our civic engagement work with meetings to ensure member voices are included with elected officials and candidates
• Speak about Make the Road work and campaigns in public spaces and to the press and train members to do the same

Requirements:

• Eligible to work in the United States
• In-Person Work Requirement m- All staff, except where explicitly noted, are expected to work in person a minimum of 3 days during their scheduled hours. In-person work fosters collaboration, builds community, and enhances our collective impact.
• Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings as needed
• Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time
• Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs
• Ability to drive and use personal vehicle for work to attend community events and other field activities
• Ability to use personal device for work-related communication and activity and activities, including phone calls, texts and chats
• Fluency in both Spanish and English is required, with the ability to communicate effectively with staff and members in both languages
• Understanding of the value of diversity, equal opportunity, and differences in perspectives in all work relationships
• Commitment to social justice and immigrant justice in particular
• Ability to meet deadlines by managing time and prioritizing tasks as needed
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office & Google Drive Suite
• Knowledge of or willingness to learn database and communication platforms
• Ability to work independently and in team settings.

Salary and Benefits:

MRStates offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days. The salary range for this position is from $57,260.00 to 66,512.00
