SALARY: $180,000 to $190,000 Per Year

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Nursing is responsible for the administration of nursing services within the facility. He/she directs, plans, and coordinates service activities of professional nursing and auxiliary nursing personnel in rendering resident care. The Director of Nursing interprets facility policies and regulations to all nursing personnel and ensures compliance, as well as analyzes and evaluates nursing and related services rendered to improve quality of resident care and to better utilize staff time and abilities. The Director of Nursing also ensures the provision of in-service training programs for nursing personnel.

RESPONSIBILITIES / ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Develops and implements philosophy, objectives, policies, and standards of nursing practice in accordance with the goals of the organization.

  • Monitors nursing care to assure that all residents are treated fairly, with kindness, dignity, and respect.

  • Develops, maintains, and periodically updates written policies and procedures that govern the functions of the nursing department, as well as the facility’s ongoing quality assurance program.

  • Completes daily rounds on the units to observe residents and to determine if nursing needs are being met.

  • Reviews nursing progress notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care provided and that they reflect the resident’s response to the plan of care.

  • Works with the Administrator to develop, allocate, and control the budget for the Department of Nursing Services.

  • Maintains cohesive public and professional relationships, including community, resident, family, and physician services.

  • Provides a formal liaison between the medical staff and the department of nursing services.

  • Provides direction to nursing staff through written policies, procedures, nursing administration meetings, routine staff meetings, and written memos.

  • Develops short and long-range plans for the nursing department that are compatible with those of the facility.

  • Serves on various committees such as Patient Care Policy, Pharmaceutical Services, Infection Control, Safety, and Quality Improvement, as applicable; evaluates activities and recommends changes in operations.

  • Participates in the assessment of residents to be admitted by evaluating the level and amount of care required in relation to existing nursing capabilities.

  • Remains on call for emergencies 24 hours a day.

  • Coordinates the revision and implementation of infection control procedures; assures all nursing staff are trained in all facets of infection control to protect staff, residents, and families.

  • Makes recommendations to the Administrator regarding nursing care equipment and supplies and assures that adequate supplies are available.

  • Assures that each resident’s attending physician and family/responsible party are promptly notified of any significant change in the resident’s health condition.

  • Ensures that the nursing care developed through the resident’s Care Plan is implemented, reviewed, and modified as necessary.

  • Coordinates nursing services with all other services and departments to ensure proper care of the resident.

  • Assures that all Physician Orders are followed as prescribed.

  • Assures that each resident’s accident or incident is fully documented and reported in accordance with facility policies and Federal/State regulations.

  • Determines the staffing needs of the Nursing department necessary to meet the nursing needs of the residents.

  • Coordinates supervisory and ancillary nursing department schedules.

  • Recruits, interviews, and hires professional personnel.

  • Reviews and evaluates the work performance of nursing staff and counsels/disciplines personnel according to established personnel policy.

  • Manages the safety of all facility residents to minimize the potential for fire and accidents; ensures adherence to legal, safety, health, fire, and sanitation codes (including MSDS).

  • Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere.

  • Performs other duties as requested.

EDUCATIONAL / VOCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, college, or university with a current registered nurse licensure by the State Board of Nursing.

  • At least two years of experience in nursing supervision in a long-term care setting is strongly preferred.

  • BSN preferred.

JOB SKILLS
  • Must demonstrate leadership skills, organization, and a positive attitude.

  • Ability to work independently, problem-solve, and make decisions as necessary.

  • Ability to positively interact with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, and government agencies.

  • Knowledgeable of nursing/medical practices and laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to long-term care administration.

  • Thorough knowledge of licensing and certification regulations.

  • Upon hire provide a negative TB skin test.

RELATED DUTIES
  • In the absence of the Administrator and/or licensed Assistant Administrator, the D.O.N. is responsible for carrying out administrative duties.

  • Interacts with residents, families, visitors, and employees.

  • Carries out other tasks where hands-on intervention or participation may be required.
