Agency Dept of Justice Division DOJ Legal Services Job Classification Title Paralegal I (S) Position Number 65017715 Grade LG03 About Us The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions. Description of Work Recruitment Range: $52,370 - $57,680 IMPORTANT NOTE: This posting closes at 11:59:59 PM the night BEFORE the End Date listed. The paralegal in this position will assist attorneys in the Consumer Protection/Antitrust Division of the Attorney General’s Office. The position performs a wide variety of legal tasks, including drafting complex legal documents, document preparation, legal research into complex issues without specific precedents, litigation support and case management, data entry, and other organizational tasks. The position possesses a thorough knowledge of federal and state case, statutory, and common law, as well as the rules of civil procedure, rules of evidence, and rules of appellate procedure. The position possesses knowledge of federal and state judicial and quasi-judicial practices and procedures. Projects are varied as required by the demands of the particular investigation and/or litigation, and this paralegal will be expected to assist the attorneys in handling matters in litigation. This position will have involvement in litigation including participation in data gathering and preparation of exhibits, documents, and affidavits. This position will also be responsible for the scheduling of witnesses, and the organization of supporting documents, exhibits, and evidence. This position organizes notices received by the Division, distributing them to division attorneys as necessary. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Management Preferences – Minimum Education and Experience Graduation from an appropriately accredited institution for paralegal training or Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of substantive paralegal experience or High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and five years of paralegal experience performing delegated, substantive legal work or an equivalent combination of education and experience Benefits The State of North Carolina offers employer paid health insurance plus twelve paid holidays, generous vacation and sick leave accrual, dental, vision, and other insurance options, and retirement benefits.
