RN Emergency Department Observation

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department Observation Unit provides skilled nursing care to adult patients requiring additional observation to determine the necessity of hospital admission or safe discharge. The role involves managing a fast-paced environment with a high patient turnover, delivering care to a diverse adult population including emergency observation and admitted boarding patients. The RN collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to ensure quality patient outcomes and maintains continuous provider coverage in a 24/7 setting. Responsibilities:

• Perform patient assessments and monitor patient status in the observation unit.
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
• Coordinate care for patients ranging from short stay to full admissions.
• Collaborate with healthcare providers and interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement patient care plans.
• Manage telemetry monitoring and respond to patient changes accordingly.
• Provide patient education and support discharge planning.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care activities.
• Participate in on-call, charge nurse, and holiday/weekend coverage as needed.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in New York State only.
• Minimum of two years of Medical/Surgical nursing experience.
• Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
• Current ACLS certification from the American Heart Association.
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
• Telemetry monitoring experience and certification.
• Strong clinical assessment, medication administration, and treatment planning skills.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience working in emergency department or observation unit settings.
• Familiarity with EPIC electronic health record system within the last year.
• Previous experience with rotating day, evening, and night shifts in inpatient units.

Special Considerations:

• Must be willing and able to work rotating shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, and call-back as needed.
• Ability to serve as charge nurse when assigned.
• Work environment is fast-paced with a high patient turnover and diverse adult patient population.

Scheduling:

• Rotating shifts covering day, evening, and night schedules.
• Shift assignments include weekends, holidays, on-call, and call-back responsibilities.
• Scheduling is based on unit needs and may require flexibility to cover various shifts.
