FINANCIAL ACCOUNTANT I

Penalties and Interest Specialist (LT) – Financial Accountant I (State Teachers' Retirement System) Salary: $7,529.00 – $9,352.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum classification salary. Responsibilities Serve as the Penalties and Interest Specialist for CalSTRS, managing the complex activities related to P&I assessment, calculation, dispute resolution, accounting treatment, and regulatory compliance. Conduct advanced analysis of penalty assessments and interpret Teachers’ Retirement Law (TRL), California Code of Regulations (CCR), Education Code, and new or updated legislation. Triage incoming disputes, determine research level needed, and resolve straightforward corrections. Collaborate with Legal, Employer Services, county offices, school districts, and external partners to resolve escalated or sensitive employer disputes. Reconcile contribution data, including employer AR, contribution data, and SAP/Business Direct (BD) reporting environments. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Experience in operational accounting, data analysis, and complex financial data review. Knowledge of Teachers’ Retirement Law and related regulations pertaining to CalSTRS. Ability to work independently and manage multiple competing priorities. Current Financial Accountant I examination required. Examination scores must be current. Familiarity with SAP/Business Direct (BD) reporting environments is preferred. Special Requirements Background investigation will be conducted prior to employment.
