Deputy Title IX Coordinator--Investigations
Brigham Young University is seeking a Deputy Title IX Coordinator whose primary focus will be conducting thoughtful, thorough, and impartial investigations involving alleged sexual harassment, sexual assault, and other acts of sexual violence. Working closely with and under the direction of the Title IX Coordinator, this position will spend the vast majority of its time leading sensitive investigations, interviewing parties and witnesses, evaluating evidence, preparing detailed reports, and serving as a decision-maker when appropriate.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in higher education, student affairs, student conduct, or Title IX , excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work thoughtfully and impartially with highly sensitive and confidential matters.
What you will be doing in this position
Investigations
- The Deputy Title IX Coordinator serves as a lead investigator for reports of alleged sexual harassment, sexual assault, and other acts of sexual violence involving BYU students and/or employees. The position receives complaints, conducts prompt, fair, equitable, and impartial investigations, applies relevant university policies, and fosters a supportive and respectful environment for all parties involved.
- The Deputy Title IX Coordinator may also serve as a decision-maker for Title IX investigations, determine whether university policies have been violated, determine appropriate sanctions when violations have occurred, and participate in hearing panels and appeals as required.
Alternative Resolutions
- The Deputy Title IX Coordinator will facilitate alternative resolutions in appropriate Title IX matters and serve as an impartial facilitator throughout the process. Alternative resolution approaches may include mediation, shuttle negotiation, restorative practices, facilitated dialogue, educational conversations, and other appropriate resolution methods.
- The Deputy Title IX Coordinator has the authority to determine whether alternative resolution is available or successful, to facilitate a resolution that is acceptable to all Parties, and/or to accept the Parties’ proposed resolution, often including terms of confidentiality, release, and non-disparagement.
Training and Prevention
- The position will assist with ongoing prevention and awareness campaigns focused on risk reduction, positive bystander intervention, and awareness of sexual violence. The Deputy Title IX Coordinator will also manage a calendar of education and prevention events, marketing campaigns, and related initiatives.
Receive Training and Education on Title IX Issues
- The Deputy Title IX Coordinator will remain current on Title IX issues, regulations, trends, and best practices through ongoing professional development. This includes participating in webinars, workshops, conference calls, broadcasts, regional and national conferences, and other training opportunities.
- The Deputy Title IX Coordinator also serves on campus committees as assigned by the Title IX Coordinator.
Major Accountabilities
Investigations
- Receive Title IX reports and complaints.
- Determine whether a complaint may constitute a Title IX violation and whether BYU has jurisdiction over the complaint.
- Develop an individualized investigation plan for each complaint.
- Manage the day-to-day responsibilities associated with Title IX investigations.
- Contact involved parties and provide information regarding the university's investigative process.
- Interview complainants, respondents, and potential witnesses.
- Gather and secure evidentiary materials.
- Maintain accurate, thorough, and detailed records and notes throughout the investigative process.
- Act as a neutral and impartial party throughout all aspects of an investigation.
- Provide supportive measures, resource referrals, and reasonable accommodations to eligible complainants and other parties as needed.
- Request interim measures in situations that are extreme or dangerous.
- Ensure investigations are conducted in accordance with Title IX and approved university policies, including the Sexual Harassment Policy and related grievance and administrative review procedures.
- Notify students of their rights, options, and responsibilities under Title IX.
- Maintain confidential Title IX complaint records.
- Develop regular, comprehensive reports for the Title IX Coordinator and other university personnel as appropriate.
- Provide ongoing updates regarding investigations to the Title IX Coordinator and BYU General Counsel as appropriate.
- Identify and implement improvements to the investigative process consistent with applicable law and university policy.
- Serve as a decision-maker for Title IX investigations, determining whether parties are responsible for policy violations and determining appropriate sanctions.
- Participate in hearing panels and appeals of Title IX investigation decisions as required.
Alternative Resolutions
- Determine whether Alternative Resolution is available or likely to facilitate a resolution acceptable to all parties.
- Determine whether an investigation should be paused, limited, or continued during an Alternative Resolution process.
- Facilitate communication between parties and their advisors.
- Obtain informed written consent from parties participating in the Alternative Resolution process.
- Provide parties with appropriate notice regarding the allegations, process requirements, rights, and potential terms of resolution.
- Educate parties and their advisors about options available under the Sexual Harassment Grievance Procedures.
- Conduct alternative resolution proceedings, including supportive measures, educational conversations, mediation, shuttle negotiation, restorative practices, and facilitated dialogue.
- Determine whether an Alternative Resolution process should end early when appropriate.
- Seek out and receive appropriate training in alternative dispute resolution methods.
Training and Prevention
- Train students and other campus constituents regarding their rights and responsibilities under Title IX.
Receive Training and Education on Title IX Issues
- Participate in regular training and education related to Title IX issues.
- Participate in webinars, workshops, conference calls, broadcasts, and other professional development opportunities.
- Attend regional and national conferences and training sessions to remain current on Title IX trends, issues, regulations, and best practices.
What qualifies you for this role
Required Education and Experience
- Minimum Required:
- Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Judicial Affairs or related field
- At least two years professional experience in Higher Education or legal setting, preferably in the field of Student Judicial Affairs, Student Conduct, or Title IX investigations.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Preferred:
- Juris Doctorate degree strongly preferred
- At least four years professional experience in Higher Education setting, preferably in the field of Student Judicial Affairs, Student Conduct or Title IX investigations.

- Understanding of legal terminology and the ability to synthesize applicable laws and regulations pertinent to Title IX issues.
- Demonstrated commitment to serving diverse student populations with sensitivity.
- Ability to identify and integrate best practices in Title IX investigations and education and to analyze and implement forthcoming guidance from the U.S. Department of Education, OCR, BYU's Office of General Counsel, and the Title IX Coordinator.
- Clear understanding of the differences between the nature, scope, and purpose of Honor Code investigations and Title IX investigations.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to work effectively with complex and confidential information under pressure.
- Ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, parents, community members, and campus departments while managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency with computer databases, spreadsheets, software packages, Microsoft Office, and Title IX tracking systems.

- This is a critical position within the BYU Title IX Office. The Deputy Title IX Coordinator works with highly sensitive Title IX matters and plays an important role in ensuring that investigations, alternative resolution processes, and prevention and education efforts are conducted thoughtfully, professionally, and in accordance with university policies and applicable regulations.

Pay Grade: 54
Typical Starting Pay: $82,000-$106,500
The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
