Job Overview A law firm seeks a Data Protection and Commercial Contracts Counsel in Madison, WI. This role involves leading the firm's data protection strategy and assisting with commercial contracts to ensure compliance with relevant laws and ethical obligations. The Counsel will educate firm members on best practices and negotiate contracts to manage risk and support business goals. Duties Develop and maintain data protection strategies, policies, and procedures. Advise on data protection and AI legal developments. Review and negotiate vendor and client contracts. Monitor compliance with data protection laws and firm policies. Support the firm's health plan privacy program. Coordinate with Records Management on retention policies. Assist with client data protection audits and inquiries. Support incident response and remediation efforts. Develop data protection training programs. Promote a culture of data protection within the firm. Requirements 5+ years of data protection and privacy risk experience. Experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts. Strong understanding of contract law and data protection principles. Knowledge of U.S. privacy laws and GDPR. Education: JD from an accredited law school. Certifications: Active bar license in state of residence and office location. CIPP/US and CIPP/AIGP certifications preferred. Skills Strong negotiation and stakeholder management skills. Ability to communicate complex requirements effectively. Excellent analytical and organizational skills. Ability to work independently in a fast‑paced environment.
