Position Overview The Coral Springs Police Department offers a Law Enforcement Trainee position for candidates who meet the department’s education requirements but lack the required experience for immediate officer qualification. This role allows individuals with at least 2 years active military service and a minimum of 60 college credits to transition directly to sworn law enforcement status immediately upon successful completion of the Police Academy and initial training. Upon completion, trainees are sworn‑in and promoted to Law Enforcement Officers, with a base salary increased to $77,516.00. Under the direction of a Law Enforcement Sergeant, trainees assist with non‑emergency police work and attend the Police Academy. Employee functions at entry staff level include assisting law enforcement duties, reacting with independent judgment to routine situations, and completing routine written reports. Responsibilities Enforce vehicle parking and operating laws, issue and explain citations. Assist officers with investigations of wanted, missing persons, and stolen property; help prepare police reports. Direct traffic and assist pedestrians at intersections. Prepare daily and periodic written reports and departmental forms; maintain logs and speed reports. Assist with natural disaster preparedness, emergency response, and evacuation traffic. Assist with animal control services. Attend training academy, training sessions, and seminars as directed. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college, or Preferable: two years of active duty in the military plus a minimum of 60 credit hours from an accredited college in lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree. Other military, work and education experience may be considered. Candidates meeting the 60‑credit requirement must sign a contract agreeing to complete a Bachelor’s Degree within five years of hire; credits must be degree‑seeking and not earned through Police Academy attendance. Meet Florida State Statute requirements for law enforcement officers and minimum standards from Broward College Institute of Public Safety and the City of Coral Springs. At least 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen. Current valid Florida driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Benefits and Sponsorship Law Enforcement Trainees are fully sponsored while attending the Broward College Institute of Public Safety Police Academy, including tuition, books, and required class materials. Trainees are eligible for insurance benefits during Academy attendance. Upon successful completion of both the Academy and the State Certification Exam, trainees are sworn in as officers and begin Field Training. Examination Process Apply online. Application review. Copy of driver’s license with current name and address. Copy of social security card with current correct name. Copy of military release form – DD‑214 (if applicable). Official sealed/stamped college transcripts. Oral board. Computerized voice stress analysis examination and fingerprints. Psychological evaluation. Ride‑along participation. Interview with chief of police. Extensive background investigation. Post‑offer medical examination and drug test. Completion of 12‑month probationary period.
