Pro Bono Coordinator ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER III
$63.15k - $90.21kState of Maryland
Introduction The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness. Grade Grade 15. Salary range $63,154 – $90,211 with potential for advancement up to $99,603 based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Location Office of the Attorney General, 200 St. Paul Place, Baltimore, MD 21202. Main Purpose The OAG is seeking a highly organized and mission‑driven professional to serve as the Pro Bono Coordinator for the Stephen H. Sachs Pro Bono Program. This position plays a key role in advancing the OAG’s access‑to‑justice efforts by facilitating case placement, managing volunteer attorney participation, and supporting partnerships with Maryland’s legal services community. The Pro Bono Coordinator reports directly to the Deputy Chief of Staff, who leads the OAG’s Outreach team. Position Duties The Pro Bono Coordinator leads day‑to‑day operations of the Pro Bono Program by collaborating with the Pro Bono Committee to evaluate potential cases from public interest partner organizations, manage internal case assignments, and monitor case progress. The role also includes developing, scheduling, and supporting legal clinics and pro‑bono events designed to expand the OAG’s community impact. Through these responsibilities, the Coordinator helps connect skilled OAG attorneys with underserved communities and supports the broader legal aid network. Key Responsibilities Work with Pro Bono Committee leadership to maintain the OAG’s pro‑bono tracking system. Liaise with public interest pro‑bono coordinators to staff cases, track case placements, and provide status updates. Coordinate case evaluation and placement, track approved matters internally, and monitor ongoing case progress. Solicit volunteer attorneys and determine capacity for case placement. Draft communications about pro‑bono opportunities and assist with clinic logistics, including day‑of information for volunteer attorneys and staff. Coordinate pro‑bono opportunities with legal services partners, review malpractice insurance coverage, and compile available opportunities across partners. Track all OAG pro‑bono activities, including casework and non‑casework, by monitoring submission forms and maintaining participation records. Ensure staff submit pro‑bono hours and monitor open cases to determine whether matters remain active or have been closed. Draft and distribute weekly communications such as newsletters and bulletins highlighting pro‑bono opportunities and program updates. Coordinate trainings with partner organizations and manage logistics such as scheduling, OWL postings, and drafting introductions for speakers and trainers. Serve as the primary point of contact for legal services partners, allowing the Pro Bono Committee to focus on higher‑level strategic priorities. Organize brown‑bag sessions to engage OAG attorneys and staff, promote participation, and sustain program momentum. Respond to routine inquiries received through the pro‑bono inbox and elevate complex questions to Committee leadership when appropriate. Coordinate presentations with central divisions and Agency Client Units to familiarize staff with program processes and available opportunities. Support cross‑coordination with OAG Committees and Affinity Groups including BEN, OAG Pride, and the Communications Division on pro‑bono messaging and outreach initiatives. Minimum Qualifications High school graduation or high school equivalency certificate. Three years of administrative staff or professional work. For each year up to two years of required experience, college credit hours may substitute (30 hours per year). Possession of a Bachelor’s degree may substitute required experience. U.S. Armed Forces military service as a commissioned officer involving staff work with independent judgment and analysis of complex administrative plans, policies, or operational programs may substitute required experience. Desired or Preferred Qualifications Associate’s degree in paralegal studies, criminal justice, or a related field, or equivalent experience. 1–2 years of experience in a related field such as pro‑bono coordination, project management, community outreach, paralegal work, or pro‑bono support. Experience in outreach, education, or membership development. Strong written and oral communication skills. Experience in community development or community‑building work. Ideal candidates will have experience as a paralegal or intake coordinator at a legal services organization (e.g., Maryland Legal Aid, MVLS) or similar familiarity with the pro‑bono ecosystem. Licenses, Registrations and Certifications Employees may be assigned duties that require operating a motor vehicle. Those duties require possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in the State of Maryland. Benefits The successful candidate will be eligible for subsidized health benefits (medical, prescription, dental and vision coverage) and life insurance; leave including annual (vacation), personal, sick, and paid parental leave; and participation in a contributory defined benefit pension plan after ten years. State employees are eligible to participate in two supplemental retirement plans: the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and the 401(k) Savings and Investment Plan. The state also offers a free mass transit benefit for local bus and express bus services. Equal Employment Opportunity The Office of the Attorney General is an equal‑opportunity employer that encourages all interested persons to apply regardless of race, color, religion or belief, ancestry, national origin, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, disability, pregnancy, family or parental status, veteran status, genetic information, or any protected category prohibited by local, State or federal laws. #J-18808-Ljbffr State of Maryland
